On her third release, In the Sun, Jane Monehit announces her artistic maturity. Essaying a grand swath of work from composers including Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, Ivan Lins, and Judy Collins, the young, much-publicized singer approaches each song with a stunning balance of technical assurance and emotional commitment. Whether the material speaks of bossa nova (“Chega de Saudade," “Once I Walked in the Sun”), standard balladry (“Some Other Time,” “It Never Entered My Mind”), swing (“Cheek to Cheek”), or even folk-oriented work (“Love Has No Pride,” “Since You Asked”), Monheit’s rhythmically sure, light-toned approach buffs everything to a lovely glow. Monheit also gets first-rate support from such A-list jazz musicians as bassist Ron Carter and drummer Kenny Washington, as well as talented players including saxophonist Joel Frahm and pianist Michael Kanan. And while some selections are presented in duet form, with Monehit interacting simply yet powerfully with either piano or guitar, others feature inspired arrangements from such masterly orchestrators as Alan Broadbent and Vince Mendoza. If the huge praise for Monheit’s earlier releases seemed a bit premature, In the Sun fully deserves all the plaudits it will undoubtedly receive.

She is one of the rarest of talents that you will buy no matter what I or anyone else writes about her simply because her voice can take you places you thought never existed...
Having purchased this CD at a live Jane Monheit performance I could hardly wait to get home and play it. This is by far her best CD yet. It was worth the price just to be able to hear "Once I Walked In the Sun" whenever I wish. It is the best song on an CD full of songs performed as only Jane Monheit can. Mel, rest in peace Jane is here.
My dad, 78, was visiting me. We had purchased some CDs, and he had found some re-releases of his old favorites. In the course of our discussion while we listened, he lamented that people just didn't sing that way anymore. So, I slipped this CD on without warning him. When she started singing, Dad asked me in amazement, "WHO IS THIS?" She so musically lands on each note. Her control is so great, she makes it sound easy. And then, she steps back and lets the instrumentalists have fun (and shine.) What a gift she has... and what an opportunity We have to listen! Thank you, Ms. Monheit.
I had the chance to see Jane Monheit in her brazilian tour earlier this year. She performed some songs that are now in this new release. Her powerful yet smooth voice, and her ''mis-en-scène'', will sure grant her the plce she deserves in the new jazz scene.
