What Gene Wilkes says is right on target at delivering a corrective for so much of what we see masquerading as Christian leadership. Don’t read this book if you are unwilling to be challenged—or even changed.

Dr. Gene Wilkes was educated at Baylor University in Greek/Religion as an under-graduate and Southwestern Theological Seminary as a graduate student earning his Master of Divinity and a Ph.D. in New Testament. His educational background has been a cornerstone in his preparation and application of his teachings on servant leadership. His education provides knowledge as well as training in thorough research and the examination of Christ and of Christ's practice of servant leadership in the New Testament. In addition to his education, Dr. Wilkes has had many years of experience in practical application of the principles taught in Jesus on Leadership. He has served as pastor of Legacy Church in Plano, Texas for twenty-two years. During his time as pastor, Dr. Wilkes makes note of his own experiences in learning true servant leadership as, over time, he lead his church through transition in order to more adequately accomplish the church mission. He has also taken his knowledge and experience of servant leadership on the road as he travels internationally to teach the concepts of servant leadership at conferences. Dr. Gene Wilkes stands as a qualified author to share his expertise in servant leadership. Jesus on Leadership: Timeless Wisdom on Servant Leadership is an explanation of seven practically applicable principles of servant leadership taken from biblical accounts of Jesus' life and ministry. Dr. Wilkes opens the book with the powerful principle of learning how to humble one's self. Attaining true humility is not an easy task but it is an essential first step in practicing servant leadership. The second principle builds on the first as it explains that in order to be a good servant-leader, one must learn to be a good follower. The third principle explains how leaders must find true greatness in service, not power or position. Principle four examines how Jesus was a great risk taker and leaders must also be great risk takers as it applies to the mission God gives to fulfill. Principle five offers a clear understanding of how to lead through service through examining the passage in John where Jesus washes the disciple's feet. Principle six addresses the necessity of equipping others for service and the final principle centers around how to build a team and why it is essential to ensuring the mission continues after the original leaders is gone. The goal of this book was to explain timeless principles of servant leadership for the purpose of meeting the practical needs of leaders among the body of Christ. This goal was executed extremely well as the author covered what it takes to become a servant leader by addressing both the practical application of servant leadership concepts as well as a spiritual evaluation of one's own motives and heart. What makes this book unique is both the thorough examination of Jesus' style of leadership in the gospels as well as the strength of the points of application of these principles. Dr. Wilkes offers rare insights into the passage in the Gospel of John when Jesus washes the disciple's feet. This passage is considered highly significant in the study of servant-leadership, yet is arguably not well understood in terms of practical application for the leader by those who study it. The greatest benefit of having this book in one's resource library is, as the title says, the principles are timeless. It is a rare book that one can read a second time and still be just as effective as the first time.

Gene Wilkes is a practioner. This book is written by one who has learned servant leadership with both head and heart! Some of his statements, such as 'If God has called you to a divine mission, God will provide the leadership resources to complete that mission,' will not play well with the 'leaders are born, not made' crowd, and thus be overlooked. However, Gene Wilkes provides all of us with hope that, in Christ, 'ALL things are possible to them that believe' - including the ability to lead! This book is courageous, and should challenge ANY who aspire to true Biblical leadership!

Excellent book - the section on team minstry and how Jesus selected and developed His team was particularly good. The book is full of highly practical examples of how Jesus led, and should be read by all Christian leaders.
