Overview

This single CD, unlike the more comprehensive Classics series, has just some of the highlights from Louis Armstrong's Victor recordings of 1932-1933. The backup big band generally sounds under-rehearsed and occasionally out of tune, but Armstrong is the dominant star anyway. Although not of the consistent high level of Louis' 1929-1931 orchestra records, there are quite a few gems on this set, including the touching "That's My Home," "I've Got the World on a String," "Hustlin' and Bustlin' for Baby," remakes of "Basin Street Blues," "Mahogany Hall Stomp," and "St. Louis Blues," and the somewhat bizarre "Laughin' Louie." In addition, there are two three-song medleys of "Armstrong Hits." This CD is worth picking up by those not already owning the Classics releases, although it is advisable to get Louis Armstrong's earlier Columbia CDs first.
