Overview

Much like kindred spirit Dido, this 20-year-old singer-songwriter was catapulted into the mainstream spotlight through a rather off-kilter rap collaboration -- in Brook's case, an appearance on Fort Minor's "Where'd You Go." Her unusually nuanced album debut indicates that she's similarly capable of holding listeners' attention on her own, through songs that are engagingly subtle yet deep with emotion. Brook's calling card is a soprano voice that swoops like a bird of prey -- or, if you're thinking more literally, like Sarah McLachlan -- over the piano swells of songs like "Give It Up for You" and "Cellar Door." There's an elegance at play in Brook's songs that lends a palpable coolness to some of the disc's tracks -- especially "What I Wouldn't Give," which has become something of a staple on the soundtracks of TV dramas -- but when she lets her guard down, she's far more effective. That's borne out by the faintly jazzy, bass-driven "All Will Be Forgotten" as well as "Saturdays," one of the album's most upbeat pieces, on which she tries on some beatnik threads that suit her well. At times, Like Blood Like Honey comes across as something of a hodgepodge, stylistically speaking. But for someone who's not yet old enough to (legally) drink, Brook still manages to whip up quite an intoxicating brew.

I love, love, love Holly Brook! I saw her live with Fort Minor and was blown away! Its refreshing to finally hear an album with solid lyrics and awesome vocals. I HIGHLY recommend "Like Blood, Like Honey" She is all I've listened to for the past two weeks and I don't see that changing anytime soon!

I was stunned the first time I listened to Holly Brook’s debut album Like Blood Like Honey. Her voice is angelic, the lyrics are superb and the instrumentals are beautifully subtle, but not too sparse. The first song “Giving It Up for You” is a great start to the album. It has the potential to be a hit single with its clever lyrics and catchy hook. Another standout is the title song “Like Blood Like Honey”. The song showcases Holly’s range over a delicate acoustic guitar. The title is appropriate because the song flows like honey while sounding equally sweet. My favorite song on the album is “Heavy”. It is about as perfect as a song can get. The chorus is infectious and upbeat despite the songs serious subject matter. It’s hard to imagine that Holly is on 20 years old, because the songs sound as if they were written by someone who has a lot of life experience. There is not a bad song on Like Blood Like Honey, and it is an album that can be listened to over and over again. Holly’s music can make perfect background music in a coffee shop, can be listened to on a rainy day, or any time you want to hear something poignant and thought provoking. This is an incredible start to a blossoming career. I expect great things from Holly in the future.
