Live at the Rainbow Room

Live at the Rainbow Room

by Jane Monheit

7 New & Used Starting at $1.99

One thing’s for sure: Singer Jane Monheit loves the standards. You can tell by the way she addresses a great song with both respect and from-the-heart affection, playing up the crafted quality of the composition rather than the obvious charms of her sumptuous voice. She’s got the goods and she knows it; she doesn’t have to knock you over the head with her gifts. This young, extravagantly talented artist gives herself plenty to work with on this vibrant live recording. The songs, be they American favorites ("It Never Entered My Mind," "Tea for Two”) or Brazilian standards (“Waters of March,” “Dindi”) or the occasional offbeat choice (Bill Evans’s “Turn Out the Stars,” Judy Collins’s “Since You Asked”) are aces, and Monheit makes the most of them all. Her superb accompanists, including bassist Ron Carter, and pianist Alan Broadbent, and drummer Kenny Washington, are certainly no hindrance, either. Recommended for those whose love of sterling songs is as great as this singer's.
