It’s been five years since the teenage blues guitarist and soul singer Johnny Lang released a CD. During that time, it seems that music took a backseat to growing up and turning toward a Christian lifestyle -- his new album, Long Time Coming, is Lang's hymn to the urban Christian life he now leads. The album finds Lang paired with songwriter/producer Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Pink); the two wrote all the songs and played all the instruments on Long Time Coming, which moves out of the blues into the California sun. “Red Light” is the Beach Boys meet the Beatles. “Touch,” on which Lang sings like Justin Timberlake, is contemporary pop with electronic beats. The introspection and inspiration that Lang has experienced in his rebirth are reflected in “Red Light,” “If We Try,” and “Get What You Give.” Like a beacon in the storms of life, Lang’s keening guitar filters through the layers of pop on “If We Try.” “Red Light” has a folky and tender sound before bursting into a tortured rock ballad, while “Get What You Give” is funky throughout. Only the title cut has Lang’s former blues feel. Here, it’s just the guitarist singing and playing with soft drum brushes behind him as he reaches back to his roots. Blues, pop, and soul fans will all love the bonus live track, Lang’s reworking of Stevie Wonder’s “Livin’ for the City.” --Roberta Penn
