Meet Joe Mac

Meet Joe Mac

by Joe McIntyre

With his sophomore solo disc, Meet Joe Mac, former New Kids on the Block cutie Joey McIntyre proves he still has enough charisma to send the hearts of teenage girls aflutter. While his sound is not as shriek-inducingly infectious as that of his premier boy band (without New Kids, there would be no 'N Sync or Backstreet Boys) or as R&B savvy as the underrated, self-titled disc by fellow heartthrob and N.K.O.T.B. alum Jordan Knight, McIntyre's strength lies in his sweeping vocals and in the positive message of his lyrics. For instance, on the bouncy, rock-guitar-accented "We Don't Wanna Come Down," McIntyre muses: "O beautiful for spacious skies/Can you tell me where our future lies?/In a world controlled by coke and greed/I wonder how our kids believe in/One love, one life..." Although his concern for America's youth seems sincere, McIntyre's message is not always so heavy-handed. For sheer pop enjoyment, Meet Joe Mac offers the catchy "NYC Girls," the Beatles-esque "With a Girl Like You" (complete with McIntyre chanting "Yeah, yeah, yeah"), and the swoon-worthy, mid-tempo track "Walking My Baby Back Home." After listening to JM sweetly croon "If I could only teach my heart to talk/If I could only get my words to walk," on the acoustic-guitar-driven "Love Song," it's evident that Christina Aguilera is not the only pop star who knows what a girl wants. All the young (and not so young) ladies who grew up with New Kids will be glad the Mac is back.
