This edition is excellent for giving new life and vibrance to the Scriptures. It gives a clearer picture for some of the more 'wordy' passages. It makes the Bible easier to understand by using our vernacular. Wonderful tool!

This is not the Bible. It's one man's attempt to make the Bible more accessible. It can be a useful tool to help understand scripture, and it can also obscure things. One example: The Lord's Prayer states "Give us this day our daily bread" which has come to have a depth of meaning that goes beyond the simple phrase. Peterson's translation "give us three square meals" sounds far more dated (who refers to square meals any longer) than the earlier translations, and fails to give the depth of those translations as well. If you buy this, make sure it's not the only version you own.

I love this contemporary Bible! It¿s not the most accurate translation¿it¿s really not fair to even call it a translation, but rather a paraphrase betraying Peterson¿s religious convictions¿but I just find it enjoyable to read. It¿s poetic and beautiful. Do not use it as a study Bible, but as an inspiring read.I chose the book of John to highlight some of the translations, so you can get a feel for the wording. These aren¿t my favorite passages, but they do highlight what I mean by a ¿paraphrasing.¿KJV: John 1:12-13, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.Message: But whoever did want him, who believed he was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves. These are the God-begotten, not blood-begotten, not flesh-begotten, not sex-begotten.KJV: John 1:31, And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.Message: I knew nothing about who he was¿only this: that my task has been to get Israel ready to recognize him as the God-Revealer. That is why I came here baptizing with water, giving you a good bath and scrubbing sins from your life so you can get a fresh start with God.KJV: John 3:29-30, He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease.Message: The one who gets the bride is, by definition, the bridegroom. And the bridegroom¿s friend, his `best man¿¿that¿s me¿in place at his side where he can hear every word, is genuinely happy. How could he be jealous when he knows that the wedding is finished and the marriage is off to a good start? That¿s why my cup is running over. This is the assigned moment for him to move into the center, while I slip off to the sidelines.KJV: John 6:43-44, Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to me, except he Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.Message: Jesus said, ¿Don¿t bicker among yourselves over me. You¿re not in charge here. The Father who sent me is in charge. He draws people to me¿that¿s the only way you¿ll ever come. Only then do I do my work, putting people together, setting them on their feet, ready for the End.

This really made the bible clear to me. For the first time I could read it with ease and really absorb the meaning. Highly recommended for anyone who struggles with reading ordinary bibles.

You could call it the Hip Hop version because of it being so easy to read, I recommend it if you are having trouble understanding your Bible and wish to understand better. I do not recommend this as a replacement for your Bible though, only as a reference tool.

For various reasons, my outlook on Scripture had become jaded--almost as if the various translations were just so many brands of cola. All essentially the same, and consumers could buy according to their personal taste. Reading THE MESSAGE was unlike any other translation in my life. (It's the uncola UnBible.) Fresh, exciting, crisp, fast-moving. It seemed I was reading the New Testament for the first time--quite a sensation considering the many years I have studied and taught from more traditional translations. This is the ideal translation for those who, like myself, have become so familiar with Scripture that they begin to take it for granted. THE MESSAGE is also perfect for anyone who has been turned off or intimidated by the King James Version. The best way to describe it is that it's like finding personal letters in an old attic. They are nothing less than compelling! THE MESSAGE is a book I highly recommend to people of all faiths and interest levels, but only if they want to read something that is both energized and energizing.

From a majority vote, this 'version' really has God all over it. The way that Mr. Peterson articulates the concepts of the scriptures, brings to light a wide array of personal application and God's 'personal' view as to the actual way He had intended our lives and interpersonal relations to be. Taken that this is a version and not a word for word translation, will simply open your eyes when read in light of the King James or New King James. Especially if you are struggling with a certain passage or verse, read the Message and your comprehension as well as your understanding will simply unfold to His basic truth; that Jesus came down here to shed the reality and truth of REAL living upon this world with His Love, for us all.

This is probably the most inspiring and relevant Bible I have ever read. It speaks to me in contemporary language that makes sense.
