If there was a non-Latino King of Latin music it was the vibist Cal Tjader. Enamored of Latin rhythms while with George Shearing's quintet in the early-'50s, this gringo of Scandanavian descent nurtured an innovative Latin-jazz concept until his death in 1982. Tjader was one of the music's most popular and prolific bandleaders, recording dozens of important albums for a variety of labels -- his '60s work on Verve is well worth investigating. This 78-minute live CD, originally two LPs, features one of the great tandems in Latin music history -- conguero Mongo Santamaria and timbalero-drummer Willie Bobo, both of whom had recently left Tito Puente's Orchestra for Tjader's band. This breezy set of standards and originals -- including an early airing of Santamaria's classic "Afro Blue" -- finds Tjader and company -- flutist Paul Horn, bassist Al McKibbon, and pianist Lonnie Hewitt-- snuggling right into the tight Santamaria-Bobo rhythmic cushion.
