Prepared with the help of noted experts, this book contains many short, unsigned articles that offer insight into the Bible. It is divided into six sections--The Pentateuch, History, Poetry and Wisdom, Prophecy, The Gospels, and The Early Church--and within each section, articles deal with such topics as the location of the Garden of Eden and the conversion of Saul. Boxed features, charts, and maps offer additional related information, and the text is lavishly illustrated with color art reproductions. The style is informal and readable. But though the articles are good, some are no more than one to three pages long and occasionally seem a little superficial. In general, however, this is an interesting and informative book for laypersons. It is also well indexed. Recommended for public libraries.-- C. Robert Nixon, M.L.S., Lafayette, Ind.
