The lush and unique photography in this book represents National Geographic's Photo Ark, a major initiative and lifelong project by photographer Joel Sartore to make portraits of the world's animals—especially those that are endangered. His powerful message, conveyed with humor, compassion, and art: to know these animals is to save them.

Sartore is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. With a goal of photographing every animal in captivity in the world, he has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Paired with the eloquent prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, and an inspiring foreword from Harrison Ford, this book presents a thought-provoking argument for saving all the species of our planet.

The photographs in this book are absolutely amazing. I'm sure we've all seen wildlife photography, but Joel's attempt to get as close as possible so you can look into their eyes takes this photography to the next level. Using only a black or white background also allows the animal to really stand out. I know I noticed details I may have overlooked otherwise and I look forward to discovering even more as I review this book again and again.. I wasn't expecting some of the comparison photos, but it was incredible to see how some animals, although completely different, actually resemble each other. Can't say enough. Wonderful gift. It's not just a book, it's an experience. Hope this book makes the impact he's looking for. Not a single one of these animals, or others, should be lost to us forever. Love. Thank you Joel Sartore and National Geographic.

I bought this beautiful book of endangered animals for my Grandson Wilks Andrew Johnson who is 18 months old and has trouble walking due to numerous upper respiratory infections since birth. So many breathing treatments and antibiotics that have had an affect on his motor skill development. I realize he is a little young for this book now but he loves books, to read to him and to hold board books and pop ups bought by me and various family members. I've had trouble getting book @$24.97 discount price and paid full $35.00 price @ Barnes and Noble in Madison, Ms. recently. Is there a possibility of a rebate? Thank you for your consideration. Regards, Merry Christmas and God Bless Joel's wife and family w/continuous good health in any regard. Angela Johnson 1145 Antrim Loop Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910 Cell phone #601/946-7545. ( it is just such a beautiful coffee table book, I do wish more family members could purchase this book. Also purchased book full price for my son in law, William Daniels for his birthday in October @ Barnes and Noble Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs but also had trouble getting $24.95 price there, as well. Thank you and sincere Best Wishes, Angela Johnson and Family

This is a most wonderful collection of animals, plain and simple, not in their environment but alone. The amount of love and work shows through in every photo. What a great gift this would be for the true animal lover!
