Overview

Glancing at the pastel cartoon covers of early jazz samplers brought out by the Timeless label during the 1990s, some people might not take these albums very seriously. That's really a shame because without exception, each collection in the catalog is packed with great music from the years between the first two world wars. New Orleans in the 20s, for example, is stocked with 24 titles by eight different crescent city jazz bands. They are, in order of appearance, Johnny DeDroit & His New Orleans Jazz Orchestra; Fate Marable's Society Syncopators; the Original Crescent City Jazzers; Johnny Bayersdorffer & His Jazzola Novelty Orchestra; the Halfway House Orchestra (also known as George Brunies & His Orchestra); Anthony Parenti's Famous Melody Boys (also known as Parenti's Liberty Syncopators); the famous New Orleans Rhythm Kings, and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra. While most of these recordings have since appeared on a number of great New Orleans jazz collections, including J.S.P.'s amazing four-CD set Breaking Out of New Orleans, this Timeless disc is highly recommended as both an introduction and a handy supplement for most anyone's personal library of classic early jazz.
