Three years and a new label later, Delbert McClinton is back, and the good news is that Nothing Personal raises the bar, one-upping the artist’s previous triumphs. He enlists Iris DeMent to help put the hurt on a prototypical honky-tonk weeper, "Birmingham Tonight," and Bekka Bramlett to add some saucy twang to the boudoir blues of "All Night Long," but mostly this is Delbert front and center, and it's beautiful. Playing guitar, organ, and of course the most soulful harmonica this side of James Cotton, McClinton serves up raw, sizzling electric blues spiced with wry, self-deprecating humor ("Livin' It Down"); gets funky on "Desperation"; and offers an engaging homage to Jimmy Reed on the pragmatic, steady-rolling "Nothing Lasts Forever," complete with a low-rent studio sound à la Vee-Jay, circa 1955. Nothing tops the deeply introspective moments here, especially when McClinton's earthy, raspy voice assays the detritus left in the wake of a departed lover in the Tex-Mex-flavored ballad, "When Rita Leaves." There are 13 elegant tracks in all, and Delbert brings it home on each one.
