Overview

In this second novel in Sharon M. Draper’s Jericho Trilogy and Coretta Scott King Honor Book, Jericho and November are locked together in pain from the past and fear for the future, and it feels as though there’s no way to escape either.

When November Nelson loses her boyfriend, Josh, to a pledge stunt gone horribly wrong, she thinks her life can’t possibly get any worse. But Josh left something behind that will change November’s life forever. She’s pregnant and now she’s faced with the biggest decision of her life. How in the world will she tell her mom? And how will Josh’s parents take the news? She’s never needed a friend more.

Jericho Prescott lost his best friend when he lost his cousin, Josh, and the pain is almost more than he can bear. His world becomes divided into “before” and “after” Josh’s death. He finds the only way he can escape the emptiness he feels is to quit doing the things that made him happy when his cousin was alive, such as playing his beloved trumpet. At the same time, he begins playing football, where he hopes the physical pain will suppress the emotional agony. But will hiding behind shoulder pads really help? And will his gridiron obsession prevent him from being there for his cousin’s girlfriend when she needs him most?

November Blues

TUESDAY, MARCH 30

NOVEMBER NELSON LURCHED TO THE BATHROOM, feeling faint and not quite in control of her suddenly unsteady legs. She touched her forehead and found it warm and glazed with sweat. Sinking down on the soft blue rug in front of the toilet, she was grateful for the momentary stability of the floor. But her head continued to spin, and her stomach churned. She lifted the toilet lid, gazed into the water, and wished she could disappear into its depths. Her breath became more shallow, and her nausea more intense. Finally, uncontrollably, and forcefully, all her distress erupted and she lost her lunch in heaves and waves of vomiting. Pepperoni pizza.

She flushed the toilet several times as she sat on the floor waiting to feel normal again. Finally she stood up shakily, gargled with peppermint mouthwash, and peered at herself in the mirror.

“You look like a hot mess,” she whispered to her reflection. Her skin, instead of its usual coppery brown, looked gray and mottled. She hadn’t combed her hair all day, so it was a halo of tangles.

November knew her mother would be home soon and would be angry to find out she’d skipped school. She didn’t care. Her thoughts were focused on the package in her backpack. Even though she knew the house was empty, she made sure the bathroom door was locked. She dug the little purple and pink box out of her book bag and placed it on the sink. It seemed out of place in her mother’s perfectly coordinated powder blue bathroom.

With trembling hands she unwrapped the plastic and opened the box. She read the directions carefully. She looked out of the small bathroom window and watched the last of the early spring snow melting on the grass. Everything looked the same, but she knew in her heart that it was all different now.

November finally turned back to the little white tube in the box and followed the instructions, which were written, she noticed, in Spanish and French as well. Three minutes later the indicator silently screamed the news that she already suspected. She was pregnant.

November Blues by Sharon Draper was a very good book that was relatable in so many ways. Many teens and young adults can relate to this book because it includes love, grief, stereotypes, and friendship. The situations in the book happen every day in real life so it made the book easier to read.
The main focus of the book is on a teenage girl named November. She had been going out with a boy named Josh for two years. Josh died in a club initiation gone wrong, which completely crushed November. A few weeks after his death, November found out she was pregnant with his baby. The story also discusses her friends, Jericho and Olivia. Jericho was Josh's cousin and after learning of his death, quit his passion. the trumpet. Olivia was a smart girl that was rarely noticed but was very caring.
They undergo peer pressure and stereotypes, along with pressure from parents, bullying, and inner conflicts. All of these things make the book easier and more fun to read. This book was a great read and made me realize a lot of things. I would recommend this book to everyone.

This is a good story that's sad and happy and shows the hardships both of the main charectors go through. It took me awhile to get used to the dialog... so if you're one of those people who hates to read dialog that's written in slang, I wouldn't read this. It was exciting, when I finally reached the climax, I couldn't put it down!!

November Blue is a typically love story that turns into a tragic story. November Nelson is in a situation that any teen wouldn’t want to be in. Her boyfriend just died in a fraternity accident, He jumped out the fourth story of a building. Now she is missing school at home in her bathroom crying and feeling like she is about to throw up. She thinks she knows what is happening to her but she checks just in case. She pulls a pregnancy test out her book bag by the window. November wait 3 minutes and she looks in doubt, as she completely looks at it the test says positive.  Dana November’s best friend brought her homework for that day and she was the first that she told the news to. Dana was very blunt person and said anything that is on her mind. When she heard the news she was shocked. She ever knew that November would do anything like that. Dana was worried for her because she knew that the baby wouldn’t know her father. Dana promised November that she would be there for her all the way through the pregnancy, if she was going to keep the baby.  Then book switches over to Jericho’s character. This part of the book could be confusing to some people it just jumps into a new character. Jericho Prescott is Josh Prescott cousin, November’s boyfriend. It starts off with Jericho walking in school and feeling depressed because there are posters everywhere. His band instructor walks up to him and asks him how he is doing. The teacher to come back to band, Jericho says he can’t the trumpet reminds too much of Josh. He is interested in football but he is having a hard trying to get it together.  I would a recommend this book to a group of teens that are interested in teen drama because it covers all aspects of teen drama. I wouldn’t recommend it to a group of teen that like adventurous thing or funny books. This wouldn’t be right for them; November Blue is the complete opposite. I am a teen that is into teen drama, I feel that this was perfect for me because I read this book in a very little amount of time. I couldn’t put the book down after I read every chapter because I was so interested on what was going to happen next.

AMAZING NOVEL! This is an amazing novel based on a teenage girl named November whose life changes forever. She loses her boyfriend josh to a horrible accident and now will be starting a new chapter in her life, motherhood. My favorite character in this novel is November Nelson. I favor this character because a lot of girls can relate to her dealing with either teen pregnancy or being the “popular girl “in school having to be perfect. This novel catches your attention from the start! After reading the first paragraph the author will have you hooked in the book. I believe the message the author tried to give to the reader would be that even though you may be going through a hard situation in life keep your head up high and smile, things will get better sooner or later. Overall I think this is an amazing novel and i really recommend this book to young adults.

November Blues is a truly inspirational book about a girl who goes through childhood/parenthood at the same time. I love all of her books but I must say this is by far my favorite. It's a book that most teenage girls my age can relate to, becoming a mother and being a child at the same time. This book is very realistic and moving. It gets young people to see how difficult it is being a single parent. This book shows how a young girl deals with a deceased loved one, legal problems, school, friends, and a baby. This book definitely opens young peoples eyes to the real world. People can definitely learn from this book. It tugs at your heartstrings and also makes you laugh. The situations in this book happens everyday which makes it so much easier to read. This book also deals with stereotypes and peer pressure, along with pressure from parents, bullying, and inner conflicts. I recommend this book to people of all ages. November Blues is a must read book and I enjoyed it, and I'm sure you will too!!

November Blues is about a teenage girl that is pregnant but her boyfreind is dead. She has to go through is with her mother and her freinds. They try to help her out but in the end it is up to her to make the big dicision to either keep the baby or put her up for adoption, to her boyfriends parents. I liked this book because it shows that getting preganant can happen to anybody. The meesage is to not have the baby at all.

I recently heard Sharon Draper speak and was quite taken by her. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this title as much as others by her. The story kept me reading but not enough went on to keep me enthralled.
