On his debut album, Outside the Lines, Cory Morrow draws on influences from contemporary southwestern song slingers like the Derailers (on the title track's saga of a dedicated nonconformist) and Joe Ely (whose desperado ethos informs the unrepentant confessions of "Straight to Hell") but emerges with an original voice that also suggests the flinty mindset of the Bakersfield visionaries (Merle, Buck). While the disc has its share of foot-stompin' numbers, the gentler tunes are its most compelling feature. Morrow spins beautifully woven yarns of common folk in various stages of love and longing and sets them in provocative surroundings that resonate with touches of country blues, southern rock, and Don Williams-style folk-country. Such highlights include "In Spite of Spite" (featuring stellar vocal harmonies by Jessica Murray), "More than Perfect" (which brings together southwestern rhythm and Irish soul, with the help of fiddler Brendan Anthony), "Take Me Away" (a bristling tale of a duplicitous woman and the damaged heart she left behind), and the catchy, mid-tempo gem of a lover's vow, "All Over Again." Like the aforementioned Williams, Morrow has a gift for direct, plainspoken lyrics that look deep inside their characters' hearts to reveal universal longings and fears. And for those who need a bit of brio, Morrow kicks out the jams with the best of them on the Steve Earle-style rocker "Straight to Hell"; "Dance by the Rio Grande," a jubilant Tejano-spiced tale of border town romance; and the fiery, southern-rock-fueled blowout "Misty Shade of Blue." With his respect for tradition and his renegade swagger, Cory Morrow has the sound and the guts of an important new artist to watch.
