With a voice as fraught with fragility as it is with expressiveness, Jimmy Scott essays 12 seemingly tailor-made standards on Over the Rainbow. Now in the seventh decade of a career that has seen dramatic ups and downs, Scott is also in the midst of an artistic renaissance that finds him sounding assured and enthusiastic. The supporting jazz musicians -- including saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, guitarist Joe Beck, and drummer Grady Tate -- and consistently splendid material (“All or Nothing at All,” “Everybody's Somebody’s Fool,” “Just Friends”) fit the veteran singer to a tee. Scott even gives his signature tune, “When Did You Leave Heaven?,” another shot in a heartrendingly beautiful rendition. It also takes a confident singer to approach Billie Holiday’s classic “Strange Fruit.” That Scott pulls it off with a poignancy all his own is unsurprising -- he’s as affecting a singer as we’ve got.
