Chris is a confederate through and through. He discovers that war is more than a battle of ideas when he reports a vanguard of Yankees moving through the woods near his Tennessee home and finds that his brother is part of the Yankee troop. In his attempt to warn his brother, Chris meets the dreaded Yankees soldiers and learns how much all men have in common. Published in 1958 a recommend JF classic.

The Yankees have come to his part of Tennessee and Chris isn't happy about it. They take his family's only horse and all the food they worked so hard to store for winter. He wants revenge, and in trying to gain it, realizes that he may be endangering his own brother.

The book, the Perilous Road, is about a boy who hates Yankees. Chris Brabson is a Yankee hater, like everyone else in his town. Except for his family. Chris is desperate to do anything to hurt the Yankees. One day, him and Silas try to ambush a group of Yankee soldiers passing by the road. The Yankees spot him and chase after him. He loses them in a bluff, and gets stuck. Jethro, his older brother, rescues him, and tells him he joined the Yankee army. Chris is bad, but it blows over. Later, he goes to a Yankee base, and tries to release all the mules. While he is shot at, he is joined by Silas and they release the horses. Later, as he passes by a Yankee wagon train, he tells Silas, who claims he will tell the Confederate general. After, Chris has second thoughts. Jethro was supposed to be a wagon driver. In a desperate attempt to save him, Chris goes to the wagon train and asks around. It becomes night, and Chris stays with the soldiers. He wakes up to the Confederates blowing up the wagons. He runs, and learns that war and killing are bad. This book was good, but was also lacking something. This book shows how a character can drastically change.
