Overview

This most recent Rounder conjunto anthology covers polkas, a sound and dance style most commonly linked with Poland, but which is also a major component of both contunjo and Cajun/zydeco fare. In this sampler, the 14 instrumentals show how the polka beat is diffused and incorporated into conjunto settings like the redova and huapango. Such groups as Los Vaqueros, Los Terribles, Los Dos Gilbertos and Los Hermanos Farias, as well as individual performers like Tony De La Rosa, adapt polkas and waltzes using the 10-button accordion, 12-string bajo sexto (Mexican guitar) and traditional arrangements. It's an instructive example of how styles are linked across ethnic lines.
