Like a forgotten love note found tucked between the pages of a diary, Gabriel Yared's score for Neil LaBute's lauded film adaptation of A. S. Byatt's bestselling novel, Possession, will strike a deeply resonant chord in the hearts of all but the world's most cynical denizens. Over the past two decades, the Oscar-winning composer has created soundtracks for some 50 movies, including the haunting Vincent and Theo, Betty Blue, The English Patient, and his multiple-award-winning score for Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley. For the century-spanning Possession -- a passionate tale of modern-day British academics Maude (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Roland (Aaron Eckhart) in hot pursuit of the details of an affair between 19th-century poet laureate Henry Ash (Jeremy Northam) and proto-feminist author Christabel LaMotte (Jennifer Ehle) -- Yared deploys a full range of masterful orchestral textures. Rife with the mysteries of love -- both old and new -- Possession seldom succumbs to the formulaic themes and watery clichés that dilute so many historical dramas. The rich pathos of "Poignant Thoughts," "Blanche's Suicide," and "Exile in Brittany," which recall Mozart's darker themes, is delicately balanced by the exultant "Journey to Whitby" (undertaken in the film by both the contemporary and historical pairs of lovers) and the rapturous title theme, sung with fervor by noted tenor Ramón Vargas. Rich with yearning strings, sonorous woodwinds, and inventive harmonics, Yared's score for Possession is an exquisite setting for a cinematic jewel.
