About the Author
Martha Sears, RN and William Sears, MD, are the pediatrics experts to whom American parents turn for advice and information on all aspects of pregnancy, birth, childcare, and family nutrition. Martha Sears is a registered nurse, certified childbirth educator, and breastfeeding consultant.
Dr. Sears was trained at Harvard Medical School's Children's Hospital and Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, the largest children's hospital in the world. He has practiced pediatrics for nearly 50 years. Together, the Searses have authored more than 40 pediatrics books.

Wow! I wish I could have read this book 20 years ago! Don't think that PRIME-TIME HEALTH is just for baby boomers. If you want to enter middle age in peak fitness, read this book as soon as you can. Dr. Sears tells you what you will be facing in your later years and what you need to do now to ensure that you're physically able to enjoy those years. If you're already living what you hope will be your middle years, Dr. Sears will show you how to make the best of whatever shape you're in and even what steps to take to reverse some conditions.One of the things I like so much about PRIME-TIME HEALTH, is that Dr. Sears presents a wealth of health care information all in one place: Omega-3 fish oils and why they are so important for cardiovascular and joint health. What's so special about antioxidants? Why cancer occurs. How strong stomach muscles help prevent back pain. Over and over, he explains how the health and condition of one area of your body effects the health and condition of another area. For instance, unhealthy blood vessels can contribute to hearing loss -- Dr. Sears explains why and how. The book includes chapters on eye health, breathing, and rejuvenating your joints, as well as, literally, skin and bones. Dr. Sears covers the basics of lowering high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar. You'll find discussions on which foods are best for maintaining and improving health. There's even a chapter called "Stay Safe" in which he explains why older folks are more accident-prone and how to protect yourself from falls.Another point in favor of Dr. Sears' book is that the information is so accessable. As the author of over 30 books, he knows how to translate medical terminology into plain English. Though the advice in the book in backed by scientific research, I was never bogged down in statistics or multi-syllabic Latin vocabulary. Dr. Sears writes for the ordinary Joes and Janes like me. I spent several evenings reading PRIME-TIME HEALTH and was never bored or overwhelmed by the material.When you're young, it's easy to take for granted how good you feel and how easy it is to move. Over the years, your body just slowly wears out. But just as proper car maintainence will prolong the life of your car, proper body maintenance can prolong your life and keep you strong and healthy enough to actually enjoy your later years. And, like saving money for retirement, the earlier you start the better off you'll be.I highly recommend PRIME-TIME HEALTH for all adults of any age. Younger people can start a regimen to prevent deterioration as well as provide much needed support and information to the older folks in their lives. "Primers" will appreciate understanding the changes that are occuring in their bodies and the hope of physical renewal that Dr. Sears' advice provides.
I won this through first reads. I have a whole list of books I am reading at the moment so I haven't had time to read it but I let my mom borrow it and she really likes it. She keeps quoting portions of it to me. Hopefully I have time to read it soon, sounds really good.
The publishers have put together a winner here for anyone who feels the need to better their personal health. Dr. Sears has clearly done his research and presented a wealth of info in a clear and organized manner.The book is broken into manageable sections with interesting illustrations and tables throughout to reinforce the various health topics. Scientific facts along with some simple "common sense" is used to persuade us to take small steps now and reap the large benefits in our golden years ahead. "Prime-Time" is an excellent health guide for the 40+ but its never to early to start caring for oneself. I highly recommend that you make this excellent Healthy Lifestyle guide a part of the new "you".

My mom read the book and gave me this following review."The book is extremely easy to read. That being said, I found it annoying to constantly be told to `please refer to page XX¿.As well, the same information kept being repeated ¿ not necessarily a bad thing, but it certainly got tiring.And he had a pet name for the target group the book was written for. He called us "Prime Timers" and I didn¿t like it.The information seemed to be good, and he included things not found in other books (eg. simple exercises for your hands).Over-all, his advice that our health is in our hands, and that we had better be responsible for ourselves and not rely on someone/something to do it for us is absolutely correct."
Dr. Sears' book is a absolute must have for any household where a person wants to be healthier and more fit as well as understand how foods, activities, etc., affect one's health. Based on a life-time of experience and an extensive 12-year study, this book covers it all. If one is looking for a quick weight loss guide or a fad diet book, this is not for you. If one wants a manual to the human body, helpful tips and tools, then this is indeed the book for you!
I found Prime-Time Health by Dr. William Sears (not to be confused with Dr. Barry Sears) to be a really good resource for adults 40 and older. Dr. Sears has an easy to read writing style that takes the reader subject by subject through his plan for staying healthy, dubbed Individual Retirement Account for Health (IRAH). There was not much in new information that I was not aware of (I've long been a follower of several of his contemporaries such as Dr. Ornish), but I did find the book to be motivating to take better control of some aspects of my health. His smoothie recipe was especially great and I had never considered making a super large smoothie and sipping it all day. Sound health advice is contained within these pages, and this would be a great introductory book to healthy living, especially for the 40-60 year old age group, regardless of health status.
I reviewed this book earlier, but it does not seems to be saved. Trying again:Its 4 stars for me. Every page I flip to has something that teaches me what I did not know or confirms a belief I hold - for example I always believed organic foods were sweeter. Dr. Sears agrees. The topic of flax and Greek yogurt have inspired me to add it to my diet. There is a chart of foods that are excellent for your health. There is a section on breathing, moving that I'm headed for next. Nothing is too technical. The Dr. recommends the book be read cover to cover first, then go back to specific areas that are of concern. I enjoy flipping or "rolling the dice" and being surprised how interesting the topic was. I suppose because I¿m in the age group the Dr. is targeting as ¿prime-timers¿. Thanks LibraryThing for the opportinunity to read this book.
This book was written in a very readable, easily understandable way. There were not a lot of buzz words or jargon to distract you, just a lot of actionable approaches to growing old healthfully. Though the advice is nothing I haven't heard before (eat in a nutritionally balanced way, move your body for cardiovascular health, etc) I found the way the message was relayed to be very inspirational and it motivated me to set up my own nutritional and exercise goals.
I received this book as part of the Early Reviewers on LT and enjoyed reading it. Although the book is mainly targeted to 'prime-timers', the 40 to 50 something people, I found alot of useful information in it. The book is written in an easy to understand style, with great explanations of human physiology. All in all, although some information is quite repeated throughout the book, the author does a great job in presenting the good and bad effects of our choices when it comes to our health. I would definitely recommend it to my parents, or any reader interested in keeping healthy!
This is a great book that covers head-to-toe, inside-and-outside of how human body changes as we age. Based on scientific evidence, his own medical practice, and his own experience as cancer survivor, Dr. Sears, in a easy to understand and sometimes humorous way, presents a wealth of information as to what to do, what to eat, and how to do it so to live a healthy, happy life in prime-time as we age. I couldn't put this book down when I was reading it. Though I have already maintain quite a healthy diet and exercise program for may years, I find that I can fine tune my ways based on the information that Dr. Sears shares in this book.I highly recommend this book without any reservation.
"Prime-Time" is the authors' way of saying "senior" or "retirement age" or "elder." The book is a survey of what the reader can do now, to prepare for, or to live in, those older years. They talk about cardio-vascular health, and what you can do to improve it, as well as dental health, keeping the brain sharp, reversing bone loss, vision problems, tinnitus, reducing reliance on drugs, and so on. Each chapter starts with an overview of the challenges presented by an aging body, what causes the problems, and how to prevent or ameliorate them.The information is based on science, and he quotes his sources. The tone of the book is breezy, with some of the flavor of "learn the secrets of the masters" - both more engaging and more sales-y than the standard impersonal tone found in fliers from your own doctor. I found myself setting the book down after the first three chapters, to go walk the dogs around the block. He had convinced me so well about the advantages of exercise for increasing vascular health that I felt I needed to get up and do something sensible, instead of just sitting in my chair reading the book.Their main advice for many of the different problems boils down to eat nutritious foods (not junk food) and move your body. Those are the keys, but there are, of course, more detailed recommendations for each area of health. There are some specific food recommendations, based on nutrients, and some simple exercises in the back of the book. The book is quite readable, with only a little jargon and lots of clear explanations with snappy analogies. The advice is sound, and presented clearly. This is not the next diet book craze -- it is advice about lifestyle to preserve health. Highly recommended.
I read the first ten pages in this book and then changed my schedule so I could keep reading. This book is a thorough manual for people who are ready to take responsibility for their health. Dr. Sears covers the big concerns of people middle-aged and older - cancer, obesity, staying fit, looking good, maintaining cognitive performance, reducing stress - overall being able to remain active participants in life. The book was inspiring, and the eight-week plan for improvement seems doable. I'm recommending the books to my friends.
