Rise the dark.

These were the last words written in Lauren Novak's notebook before she was murdered in a strange Florida village. They've never meant anything to the police or to her husband, investigator Markus Novak. Now the man he believes killed her is out of prison, and draws Markus to the place he's avoided for so long: the lonely road where his wife was shot to death beneath the cypress trees and Spanish moss in a town called Cassadaga.

In Red Lodge, Montana, a senseless act of vandalism shuts the lights off in the town where Sabrina Baldwin is still trying to adjust to a new home and mourning the loss of her brother, who was a high voltage linesman just like her husband, Jay. As the spring's final snowstorm calls Jay deeper into the mountains, chasing the destruction on the electrical grid, Sabrina is abducted by Garland Webb, the man Markus Novak believes killed his wife. Drawing them all together is a messianic villain who understands that you can never outpace your past. You can only rise against the future.

Author Michael Kortya has done it again. He was fashioned a storyline with well written characters that are seemingly crying to be included in another forthcoming novel. Looking forward with great anticipation for that day. The name of Michael Kortya on a dust jacket is almost a solid guarantee of an exciting and enjoyable reading experience. J M Lydon

Mark is still hurting from the loss of his wife two years prior. No one has been convicted of the murder but Mark knows who did it, Garland Webb. Garland has been in jail on another assault but gets released on a technicality. Mark is there waiting for him but Garland has joined a cult lead by Eli Page. Eli has an obsession with Nikola Tesla and plans on destroying the power grid and blaming a terrorist group. Mark has vowed never to return to Montana but that is where he finds himself to stop both Garland and Eli. This is a great story full of action and mystery. The story drew me in with the potential of a murderer walking free and added in some paranormal and crazy. Although I say crazy, Garland and Eli’s plan to take out the power grid was pretty good. I like how things are related and will admit that I read this book in two days because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. This is the first book of Michael Koryta’s that I have read and book two in the series. I had no trouble keeping up with what has happened without book one. There is also a huge cliff hanger at the end of the book so be prepared to get book three when it comes out. This is a wonderful story and I will definitely be checking out Last Words to catch up on what I missed. I received Rise the Dark from the publisher for free. This has in no way influenced my review.

This the kind of book that will make you hesitate to take a shower when you’re home alone. Author Michael Koryta has that uncanny ability to weave a story that seeps into your bones and takes over your thoughts even when you walk away from the book. Narrator Robert Petkoff brings the eeriness home with his mannerisms. Petkoff delivers the lines perfectly for the suspense factor. His varying vocals gives each character their own unique sound enhancing this thriller. Koryta brings protagonist Mark Novak back from his previous story, LAST WORDS. Koryta provides just enough background that new listeners/readers aren’t left in the dark about Mark’s earlier troubles while also enticing them to learn more. The characters are well developed with multi-layers. The secondary characters are just as complex adding depth to the story. The setting moves around smoothly. Koryta’s vivid descriptions and eye for details puts the listener/reader alongside the characters. Their emotions and reactions can be felt through the rich dialogue. Koryta blends suspense and mystery with sadistic killers, homegrown terrorism and panic for a well thought out page-turner that is plausible. He blends in just a hint of romance, a dash of family togetherness, and a glint of humor to keep the story from being too dark giving it a good balance. RISE THE DARK is an action-packed tale that will keep you guessing. While Koryta gives an ending to the story, he also hints at more to come for Mark. Adrenaline-fueled, this thriller is the stuff news headlines are made of. FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this audio book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

Not sure where I've been, but apparently I missed book number one in this series. I've read every Michael Koryta book but that one. However, that in no way interfered with my reading enjoyment. The author gave enough clues to help you understand enough to get through this book. But, not enough to where you would not want to go back and read the first one. I will say that the one thing I didn't like is the HUGE cliffhangers that were left at the end. Number three better already be in the works! HA! This book definitely is a journey and for these people to say they are peaceful. That is one huge big laugh. I really liked Marcus a lot and the author did a great job with his character. For that matter, he did a great job with all the characters. The plot twists (and there were many) were well hidden and you didn't always see them coming. "I don't have any rope" is just one that really portrayed the true nature of that character. I definitely enjoyed reading this book. I look forward to number three, but I will be enjoying number one in the meantime. Huge thanks to Little, Brown and Company for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
