Besides writing for the Dictionary of National Biography and the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, his works include Scottish Vernacular Literature: A Succinct History, The Ballad In Literature, Michael Russell, and Scotland Today, Old-World Scotland; and Mary, Queen of Scots: Her Environment and Tragedy.
