About the Author

This short children’s story is nearly the culmination of my six and a half years of service in the Army National Guard as a helicopter crew chief. I did many wonderful things during this period, helpful things and fun things. I find that this boiled down concoction is a great way to convey that of which I am most proud. My story, Tom’s story, like most is better told when it is told to a child. J. Allen Wright currently lives on the family farm with his wife and son in rural Arkansas. He still works on helicopters.

CHAPTER 1

When Tom Topper joined the Army his Captain called him to the flight line.

"Private Topper," said the Captain, "This is Sally Mae, your new helicopter! It is your job to take care of her and to keep her flying."

Sally Mae smiled and Private Topper gave his best salute.

Because helicopters can do many things it wasn't long before the Captain had a job for Private Topper and Sally Mae.

"Private Topper," said the Captain, "The forest is on fire and I need you and Sally Mae to help put it out!" Sally Mae smiled and Private Topper said, "Yes Sir!"

Sally Mae had a big orange bucket so she could pick up water from the reservoir. She flew above the hot flames and through the black smoke.

Private Topper pushed a button to drop the water from the bucket.

Soon the fire was out and Private Topper and Sally Mae went home. The Captain was very proud of Private Topper and Sally Mae. He gave Private Topper a shiny medal and Sally Mae got a good bath.

Sally Mae smiled and Private Topper gave his best salute.

One day Sally Mae was sick and could not turn her rotors to fly. Private Topper knew that it was his job to keep her flying.

He worked all day long turning big wrenches and twisting small screwdrivers. Sally Mae frowned and Private Topper worked even harder through the night.

The next morning Sally Mae could fly again and she smiled at Private Topper who gave his best smile back.

Soon the Captain had a new job for Private Topper and Sally Mae. "Private Topper," he said, "There has been a big hurricane! The supply trucks and ambulances cannot get through. Some people are even stuck on their rooftops. I need you and Sally Mae to go and help." Sally Mae smiled and Private Topper said, "Yes Sir!"
