Overview

This creepy and kooky goth-punk crew emerged some years back as the band most likely to become the Addams Family. They may have toned down the spookiness factor somewhat for Sing the Sorrow, their major-label debut, but AFI haven't lost the ability to generate chills and thrills. The disc's tone is set early on, with the cathedral bells, tribal drums, and ghost-ship wails entwining on "Miseria Cantare." The man responsible for the last element, singer Davey Havok, can wax coolly sepulchral, as on the wounded "This Time Imperfect," or electrically charged, as on the manic "Death of Seasons." The band are at their best when they're tiptoeing along on some musical ledge or another -- the hidden track, "This Time Imperfect," is exhausting in its desperation -- and less involving when they stick to punk basics (the incongruously breezy "Dancing Through Sunday"). Fortunately, Havok and company don't let too much light into AFI's hermetically sealed universe -- all the better to let the sorrow resound.
