About the Author

Raymond Briggs was born in London in 1934.  At the age of 15, he  went to Wimbeldon Art School to learn how to draw, as he wanted to become a cartoonist.  But there he was told that cartooning was not a profession for gentlemen and that he ought to be a painter.  Raymond then went on to the Slade School in London to study painting as a full-time student.  During his spare time, he began work on a portfolio of illustrations of all kinds, including jackets and a wide selection of drawings to take to publishers.  After illustrating for advertising, newspapers and books, Raymond discovered that book illustration inspired him the most, since it offered far greater variety and freedom than anything else.  Raymond has always found it unfavorable to sustain a consistent illustration style for a long period of time.  He is always seeking to try something else new and different with his work.  Some of Raymond's best known works are The Snowman , The Man , and The Bear .  The setting for The Snowman is based on Raymond's own house and garden, which is in Sussex, England at the foot of South Downs, a few miles from Brighton.

Most kids don't even realize there aren't any words in this book until they are too steeped in the story to stop. The illustrations are candid and realistic. The children follow the story and use their imagination to tell the story the pictures paint for them.
I haven't found a kid that doesn't want to be the kid that befriends a magical snowman.

Have used this book, and more so lately the VHS of the book, to encourage oral speech and dialogue writing! Illustrations are fantastic and so much creativity can be developed when the observer, or reader, puts their thoughts and words into the characters! A happy, upbeat book that can open worlds of communication!

James makes a snowman. Later that night he finds the snowman has come alive. He brings him in his house to show him around. Then the snowman takes him flying over the city. The next day James finds that the snowman has melted.A good book for beginning readers. Very simple text.

I love this book! The pictures are beautiful and very creative. The Snowman is a picture book so it gives the reader an opportunity to use their imagination! I would bring this book out during the Christmas season so the kids can see the day in a life of a snowman! This story is about a snowman that a little boy builds when it snows at his home. During the night, the snowman comes to life and him and the little boy become friends. The little boy learns how to keep the snowman "alive" the best he can. This book is great for children who can not read on a high level and would be a great book to use for the whole class. Because it is a picture book, it would make all the non readers feel confident that they can understand the whole class story. The Snowman is a good book to use when showing how to do things, like how to make a snowman. This is a great "How To" book!

This wordless picture book is an exciting illustrated guide to the fun of building a snowman and appreciating the winter season! It makes you want to sing ¿Frosty, the Snowman!¿

The Snowman is an instant classic. The pictures are amazing!!! It is about a boy who makes a snowman one day and that night the snowman comes to life. The boy shows his house to the snowman and then they go flying. When the boy gets up in the morning the snowman is gone.As a student this book is the perfect book. I love that I can read this book without looking at the words. I can make up my own story. When I do read the words I get a little sad, but overall great book.As a teacher this book is a great book to get my students to use their imagination. They can think about what the boy and snowman are thinking at any given time. This is a very beginning reader book, so it would not work with older students, but still a classic.

A wordless book about a boy who builds a snowman that comes to life in his dreams. He invites the snowman into his home and introduces him to things around the house like the stove, refrigerator, his skateboard, balloons, his dad's clothes and eating ice cubes. In turn, the snowman takes him on a flight across the city skies. Wordless books help build narrative skills as children learn to tell stories in their own words.

I grew up with this book, music and movie. The book is the still version of the wonderful tale of a boy and his snowman. The snowman comes to life and takes the boy on a magical journey through winter.

This book is super creative and a wordless story about a boy who creates a snowman that comes to life at night. The book gives the ability for the reader to create their own story. The pictures are great illustrations.

The enchanting story of a boy who makes a snowman, and he comes to life. The boy and the snowman share a humorous adventurous evening together, in the morning, the snowman has vanished. A gentle, kind, dreamy book. Great for children to make up/draw their own endings to.

The Snowman was an amazing book! I loved how each page was full of pictures and extensive details. I loved being able to follow along with the story by just looking at pictures an having no words. A part of me did feel sad at the end when I saw that the snowman had melted. The snowman was little boy's new friend an they did all sorts of things together!

the Nook version of this book crashed my Nook HD and my Nook HD+, with 300 books, no other book, app, or magazine has ever done this. I had to go into the Nook app on my PC to delete it and hard reset my Nook HD+ to fix what this book did to my Nooks. Buyer beware.
