Earl Klugh possesses one of the loveliest, most melodic guitar voices in the music world, and he brings his affinity for melody to bear on SOLO GUITAR, a collection of unaccompanied standards. His charming take on the "Wizard of Oz" classic "If I Only Had a Brain" is worth the price of the whole album, but just as noteworthy are a playfully swinging version of "It's Only a Paper Moon," a cheery version of "The Way You Look Tonight," and a jazzy reworking of "Someday My Prince Will Come." Klugh is a man of few words, and his best work has the same kind of quiet eloquence. SOLO GUITAR reminds us of how great music can sound when it's performed honestly and without unnecessary embellishment.
