About the Author

Admiral Sir Cyprian Arthur George Bridge GCB (1839-1924) was a British Royal Navy officer towards the end of the era of Pax Britannica. He was Commander-in-chief of both the Australian Squadron and the China Squadron.

Jacob Abbott (1803-79) was a prolific American author, writing histories, biographies, religious books for the general reader, and a few works in popular science. He wrote 180 books and was a coauthor or editor of 31 more.

Sir Edward Shepherd Creasy (1812-1878) was an English historian and jurist. His best known contribution to literature is his Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World (1851).

Henry Wager Halleck (1815-1872) was a United States Army officer, scholar, and lawyer. A noted expert in military studies, he was known by the nickname 'Old Brains.'

A native of Marion, Perry County, William Garrott Brown (1868-1913) was a historian and essayist during the early years of the twentieth century.
