Santana was still a respected rock veteran in 1999, but it had been years since he had a hit, even if he continued to fare well on the concert circuits. Clive Davis, the man who had signed Santana to Columbia in 1968, offered him the opportunity to set up shop at his label, Arista. In the tradition of comebacks and label debuts by veteran artists in the '90s, Supernatural, Santana's first effort for Arista, is designed as a star-studded event. At first listen, there doesn't seem to be a track that doesn't have a guest star, which brings up the primary problem with the album -- despite several interesting or excellent moments, it never develops a consistent voice that holds the album together. The fault doesn't lay with the guest stars or even with Santana, who continues to turn in fine performances. There's just a general directionless feeling to the record, enhanced by several songs that seem like excuses for jams, which, truth be told, isn't all that foreign on latter-day Santana records. Then again, the grooves often play better than the ploys for radio play, but that's not always the case, since Lauryn Hill's "Do You Like the Way" and the Dust Brothers-produced, Eagle-Eye Cherry-sung "Wishing It Was" are as captivating as the Eric Clapton duet, "The Calling." But that just confirms that Supernatural just doesn't have much of a direction, flipping between traditional Santana numbers and polished contemporary collaborations, with both extremes being equally likely to hit or miss. That doesn't quite constitute a triumph, but the peak moments of Supernatural are some of Santana's best music of the '90s, which does make it a successful comeback.

This CD has tons of energy. Anybody who loves music and appreciates the guitar and the drums must own Supernatural. Supernatural breaks the age barrier...all age groups can enjoy it.

The power behind Carlos Santana isn't his vocal style as most of the popular groups today. The power lies in the diversity of the vocal performances blending with his sizzling guitar bravado. For 30 years now, a new Santana tune can be recognized in the first few bars, and this offering is no different. Except that in my opinion, this is the hottest feast that has been offered in quite some time! Absolutely mezmerizing...

For so many years as I grow up I listen to him, I saw him in Hawaii in the 7o's which him and Buddy Miles recorded that album live from Diamond Grator on New year all day sunrise to sunset concert. He was great and still one of the best on his guitar hes own style no one, I MEAN NO ONE can play like him. Thanks Carlos for all the great sounds that you put out on tha past and the present. And bring out another ONE, and do that SWEEP again, I love it. Im from Samoa but that don't mean that we dont listen to his music.

Except for Lauren Hill, superb choice of artists with whom to make an album.

I am totally shocked by those who say Carlos sold out. If he'd actually Sold Out, all the music would have been written by other artists. He would have been the back-up guitarist (imagine that), back up vocalist, etc. etc. Instead of looking at the negative, look at it this way. He brought together many people, from so many different fields of music, including Eric Clapton (A Music God if there ever was one) and created one of the best rock albums ever created, if not the greatest. I have nearly 700 rock C.D's and this is still, two full years after it's release, on my top five. Also I really don't think I could, even with a gun to my head, pick my favorite song on this album

Santana¿s best album used to be Abraxis... now it just might be Supernatural. The Calling is primeval - my album favorite. Compare El Farol to Flame-Sky on the Welcome album (Columbia Records - vinyl). This CD may go on to be a classic.

This fabulous cd absolutely deserves more stars than just five, it includes the song smooth which features Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20. This cd derserves to be a number one hit with smooth so I think this cd is well woth it to buy!

Carlos Santana is one of the greatest rock musicians and guitarists of our lifetime. His guitar emits a searing, soulful, and peaceful vibe which infects the listener at once. Santana's music and musical collaberations are a shining beacon to the power and beauty of the human spirit, no matter its form.

Santana is back and better than ever. This album is full of excitement and interesting collaborations. Although the guitar is tame on some tracks, over all Carlos has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with. I only wish that more rock artists could make albums that are both this enjoyable and musical at the same time.

as a classic rock fan, I found this CD superb, moving. Santana has a style which is uniquely his own. He proves that classic rockers don't get old, they just get better.

This album is one of the best I have heard in awhile but Lauren Hill should've been left off. She's not that good and she definetly no good on a Spanish oriented album. Kick off Hill and my four stars will go up to five.

I am a 47 year old female, and I use to listen to Carlos Santana when I was 17, but this album tops it for me. I am so pleased that Carlos has reentered the music world again. Rob Thomas's singing of Smooth is so hot!!!! I hope they work together again soon!!!
