Overview

This unpretentious 1985 debut from a regular on the New York folk circuit helped break the hegemony of synth-pop and established a quiet niche for folk-oriented performers at major labels -- opening the door and allowing artists like Tracy Chapman and Shawn Colvin to rumble toward stardom. Lenny Kaye's production highlights Vega's finely detailed lyrics, and the calm in her quiet voice and the spare instrumentation draw you into her musings. Vega went on to create several other highly regarded recordings, including SOLITUDE STANDING and DAYS OF OPEN HAND. "Marlene on the Wall" and "Undertow," in particular, hint at the future chart juggernaut "Luka."
