Perry offers a curriculum guide for introducing 10 well-known figures, including Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, and Annie Oakley. Each chapter represents one character, giving a summary of the individual's tall-tale aspects, a bibliography for children in grades three to eight, a page of history behind the legend with additional adult bibliographic resources, multiple Internet sites of interest, and myriad activities that could be used with a class or individually for homeschoolers. The bibliographies consist of 8 to 10 books, ranging from classical retellings such as Ezra Jack Keats's John Henry: An American Legend to Rosemary and Stephen Vincent Bent's Johnny Appleseed. Most of the Web sites are still working and range from selections suitable for readers in fifth grade up to those best used by adults. Unfortunately, the few black-and-white illustrations are merely decorative and do not enhance any of the selections. This compact, instructional guide will aid in organizing lesson plans for those who are planning a tall-tale unit.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
