About the Author

Mel Robbins is an award-winning CNN on-air commentator and op-ed writer, a contributing editor to SUCCESS Magazine, best-selling author and one of the most sought-after keynote speakers in America. She began her career as a criminal defense attorney in New York City, then launched and sold several companies and hosted TV and radio programs for A&E, FOX, Cox Media, and CNN.

Now that she’s no longer arguing ""reasonable doubt"" inside the courtroom, she's teaching leaders inside the world’s leading brands how to break the habit of self-doubt and build the habits of confidence and courage at work and in life. Mel Robbins gives us a simple tool, the five second rule, to help us give ourselves the push we need to do what we truly want, to calm ourselves of anxiety and fear, to be successful. Many of the stories she used resonated with me. I'm excited to see where the five second rule helps me bring my life.

The book has a lot of good ideas for changing your well-being. I like that it's a fast read, but part 1 reads like a really bad infommercial. Stick with it, or skip part 1, and you'll finally get down to the nitty-gritty ideas.

While the premise of the 5-second rule seems solid, the book relies too heavily on publishing social media reviews and posts to "prove" this is working for people. On almost every page, a tweet or Facebook screenshot is included. If the reader wanted THAT many testimonials, it would be much better to log in to those sites rather than spend the 20 dollars for a book of them. Even though the 5-second rule purports to be backed by science, there is NO list of scientific studies, journal articles, or other substantial reports that actually are used. A book backed by science should have those scientific resources acknowledged. The author cannot do her own biased "research" and let that stand as definitive. Furthermore, any mention of utilizing the 5-second rule to "eliminate" anxiety makes me shudder. For those who battle daily with depression, anxiety, or anxiety-related issues, to suggest that this is a solution is misleading. While the book never outright says "Use this in place of your doctor-prescribed medication," it certainly gives that vibe. Not only is this unsound advice, it's irresponsible. All told, I totally believe this works for some people. However, I cannot support a book that cannot cite legitimate scientific sources as "proven" research.
