The Anne of Green Gables Cookbook Charming recipes from Anne and her friends in Avonlea By Kate McDonald and L.M. Montgomery Charming is exactly the right word to describe this cookbook. Designed for children about the age that Anne would have been in the books, these recipes are inspired by the original Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, and Anne of Windy Poplars books. Some of the recipes were inspired by the books themselves, others are straight from L.M. Montgomery’s kitchen. Written by L.M. Montgomery’s granddaughter Kate McDonald, this is a rerelease of the original collection, with a few new recipes. Safety First In the introduction, it explains the importance of safety in the kitchen, along with a few tips and hints, and other general suggestions. After the introduction is a page of Cooking Tips, and then another page of Cooking Terms. An excellent beginning for junior cooks. The first set of recipes are inspired by the original Anne of Green Gables book. Each of the recipes comes with a full page picture of the recipe and the inspiration behind the recipe with a quote and reference to the particular chapter where the quote can be found. I like that each of the recipes also includes Prep Time, Total Time and Yield. Each of the recipes has clear instructions and is easy-to-follow. I like that even the cake recipes don’t call for a store-bought mix. It’s made from scratch. Sprinkled throughout the book are also lovely flower-strewn pages with additional quotes from the books. Next, come recipes from Anne of Avonlea. Unique Content There are a lot of excellent recipes in this collection, many of which you will never see elsewhere, like the Cowcumber Boats. This fun snack is cucumber slices with a tuna topping, called Cowcumber because this was the old English way of pronouncing the French word for cucumber. The next selection of recipes is from Anne of Windy Poplars. This is a short collection of some lovely tea snacks and desserts. After which is a selection of recipes straight from L.M. Montgomery’s kitchen. The last recipe in the collection, Cavendish Catsup, is appropriate as it is inspired by the childhood home of L.M. Montgomery, Cavendish PEI, famous for their potato production. In all I was very happy with this cookbook, it’s an excellent beginning cookbook for a young person, especially one who is reading the Anne Collection. Because macaroons are one of my favourites, I have included the coconut macaroons recipe with the original review on RecipesNow! The Reviews And Recipes Magazine. This review is of a complimentary copy of the book sent to me by the publisher in hopes of an honest review.

Thank you to Kate Macdonald, L.M. Montgomery, Quarto Publishing Group, and Race Point Publishing and NetGalley for this free honest reviewer copy of The Anne of Green Gables Cookbook: Charming Recipes from Anne and Her Friends in Avonlea." I have loved Anne and Avonlea since I was a very small child, pouring over first the tv show and then devouring the novels at such a fast pace. I have such a deep love for all the young, precocious heroines I fell in love with, every bit of their lives as they grew up, and all the gorgeous world around them that it happened within. This cookbook was originally published in 1985, and so this version is a reprinting updating a good portion of the interior, adding a more modern spin on it while making sure to hold tight to the charm and class that belonged to all things Montgomery. It's relatively short compared to its contemporaries coming out, but it makes up for that with amazing amounts of charm. The chapter titles are incredibly darling (from several time periods of Anne's life: Green Gables, Avonlea, the Windy Poplars). There are even recipes from the kitchen of L.M. Montgomery's own kitchen, which made my heart swoon. Several of the recipes are, also, all familiar titles and names, and you'll definitely find yourself remembering where in the books these dishes were mentioned and enjoyed. It was, also, deeply touching to read the short stories that accompanied the recipes, knowing that they were written for L.M. Montgomery's own grandchildren. I will be keeping a copy of this and gifting it with the novels to children all through my family.

A delightful cookbook that will be cherished! I very much enjoyed THE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES COOKBOOK. Reading this treasure took me back to a loving place, and made me long for simpler times. This book starts with an introduction from author Kate Macdonald, daughter of Anne of Green Gables author, L.M. Montgomery. While this cookbook will be a favorite among adults, in the introduction, Ms. Macdonald is clearly speaking to young (child) cooks, with instructions for safety, and cleanliness (though good reminders for us adult cooks as well). The introduction is followed by helpful cooking tips and terms. Each chapter of THE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES COOKBOOK is based on a different series. Chapter 1 - Recipes from Anne of Green Gables, Chapter 2 – Recipes from Anne of Avonlea, Chapter 3 – Recipes from Anne of Windy Poplars, and finally Chapter 4 – Recipes from L.M. Montgomery’s Kitchen. Every chapter is filled with beautiful color photos of most of the recipes, along with quaint sights. Also, on just about every page, are quotes from the beloved characters of the series. Some of the recipes you’ll find are . . . Puffy Apple Dumplings, Gilbert’s Hurry-Up Dinner, Marilla’s Plum Pudding, Miss Stacy’s Baked Macaroni, White Sands Scalloped Tomatoes, Poetical Egg Salad Sandwiches, Thick and Creamy Vegetable Soup, Orange Angel Cake, Fire and Dew Sweet Potatoes, Cavendish Catsup, and so many more! I can’t stress how much I loved THE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES COOKBOOK. This heart and tummy warming cookbook is a much have for cooks off all ages, and of course, fans of Anne of Green Gables. Pick up a copy for yourself, and for a friend. You’re going to adore it!
