Bonnie Raitt has been perfecting her blues-inflected rock for the better part of three decades, but it took some time for the singer-guitarist to hit the mainstream. This nicely paced 18-song collection does a pretty complete job of covering the period since her breakthrough, drawing from all six of Raitt's Capitol label releases, from strutting pop hits like "Thing Called Love" to more pensive ballads such as "I Can't Make You Love Me." The disc delivers all of Raitt's chart hits, as well as a passel of lesser-known, but equally compelling tunes. Fans who missed, say, the sensually slurry "Gnawin' on It" or the rending "Hear Me Lord" the first time around will be glad to have another shot at soaking up their pleasures. Packaged with a detailed booklet featuring song-by-song liner notes by Raitt herself, this is an ideal compendium of all the elements that make her such a strong thread in rock's tapestry.

This CD is outstanding. It has some of her best works. It is a great mixture of songs and clearly shows her talent. This is a CD you can listen to again and again. If you are thinking about it, you must be a Bonnie Raitt fan so just buy it!

I bought the European version of this new USA release and the sound has improved, especially the first couple of Bonnie's Capitol releases, "NICK OF TIME"(now this sounds so much better with the added punch of remastering and all the selections are stand outs. Although her newer material featured here over the past 5 years received much less radio play and media buzz and non-existent videos to promote, its still very high quality Raitt and every bit as good as her "radio hits" during the first half of the 90's. From beginning to end of these 18 songs, this collection makes you smile, there really is only ONE Bonnie Raitt, slide guitar master and incredible vocalist, still after all these years into such a brillant career. I'm looking forward to many more Best of's!! Highlights are everywhere but I do love the inclusion of "Gnawin on it", "Have a Heart", "Love Letter" and Bonnie's increasing love of African textures in her music featuring "One belief Away" and the newer "Hear me lord". Bonnie is one classy lady that refuses to sell out for the money but cherishes the past musical greats who paved the way for all these current cast of 15 min fame money grappers. Although many of these collaborations were Don Was produced or co-produced, Bonnie chose to avoid the trappings of repeating herself with Was and went on to make many more creative blues based pop/ rockers, R&B nuggets and Funky songs, not to mention what she can do to a ballad! This long overdue set looks as good as it sounds.

Its nice to have all these great songs finally on one cd from the Capitol Years. Every one of these songs deserve to be on this, I wish she would put out a huge box set as a Barnes reviewer nicely put it. I'm sure the record companies could dig up all kinds of gems with so many recordings under her belt, not to mention all the recordings she done with so many in the musical world. Surely Warner Bros.(Bonnie's old label would work with her). She's also done so many live shows as well, surely there is a treasure chest full of great takes on songs. But for now this classic CD collection of some of Bonnie's best will more than do. Bonnie keeps on pushing herself and even though music has turned ugly on itself, the likes of Bonnie Raitt will forge on and keep those that love this kind of music chugging along. This belongs in everyones collection, excellent all the way through!
