To mark the tenth anniversary of their mainstream crossover, Southern pop juggernaut Hootie & the Blowfish have paused to take a look back -- and, at the same time, give fans a glimpse of what might lie ahead. This 17-song collection culls all the best-known material from Darius Rucker and company, from the warm, burnished "Hold My Hand" to the engagingly upbeat "Only Wanna Be with You." The band initially earned their stripes by blanketing the party circuit below the Mason-Dixon Line, which translates into playing several sets per night -- thus necessitating a wide-ranging fluency in cover material. That's evident here in the appropriately stomping take on Led Zeppelin's "Hey Hey What Can I Do," as well as a slow-burn take on Bill Withers's "Use Me" that makes the most of Rucker's mellifluous baritone. The disc closes with the band's most recent studio foray, a breezy remake of the theme from the classic romantic comedy The Goodbye Girl, which puts a nice capper on the first chapter in the Hootie saga -- and makes listeners eager to turn the page to see what might come next.

If you read the song list, you'll see several from Cracked Rear View, but you will ALSO see many others on the list NOT from Cracked Rear View. Reading the songlist before buying will help you prevent frustrations next time. They're still an awesome band, with music that hits home!

I had this cd 3 years ago when it was called "Cracked Rear View". This blatant attempt to con me into buying the cd I already own is not amusing. They should have gone with a telethon if they needed money so bad. Maybe they could get their buddy Dan Marino to sing backup, yeah, with Fred Couples playing the tambourine. Oh yeah, Darius Rucker sounds like a total chump on "Let Her Cry." I think I am going to sit back down and have a beer and feel sorry myself and say, Let it Die.
