In The CAFE Book, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser present a practical, simple way to integrate assessment into daily reading and classroom discussion. The CAFE system, based on research into the habits of proficient readers, is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding vocabulary. The system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small-group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs.

Gail and Joan developed the CAFE system to support teachers as they:

· organize assessment data so it truly informs instruction;

· track each child's strengths and goals, thereby maximizing time with him or her;

· create flexible groups of students, all focused on a specific reading strategy; and

· help students remember and retrieve the reading strategies they learned.

The CAFE system does not require expensive materials, complicated training, or complete changes to current classroom literacy approaches. Rather, it provides a structure for conferring with students, a language for talking about reading development, and a system for tracking growth and fostering student independence. The CAFE system’s built-in flexibility allows teachers to tailor the system to reflect the needs of their students and their state’s standards. And it’s a perfect complement to The Daily Five, “The Sisters” influential first book, which lays out a structure for keeping all students engaged in productive literacy work for every hour of every classroom day.

About the Author

Gail Boushey’s work as a literacy coach and author is based on her classroom experiences, which range from preschool through grade six and special education.  She obtained her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, Child Studies and Special Education and has a Master's degree in Special Education.

Gail has three daughters and enjoys concerts, camping, reading, and cooking.

Joan Moser’s passion for meeting each child’s individual needs by discovering where they are and guiding them forward has been practiced and refined in a variety of classroom settings. She has taught kindergarten through sixth grade, special education, and is a certified Reading Resource Specialist. Joan obtained her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Development and her Master’s degree in Reading.

When her nose isn’t buried in a book and her fingers aren't flying over the keyboard writing, you will likely find her golfing, gardening, or hiking with her husband and her puppy.

Gail and Joan (the sisters) have provided teaching professionals at the primary and elementary level with a refreshing and valuable program to improve or change existing reading and language arts instruction. Well written and anchored in the perspective of the instructor, their CAFE program promotes teaching reading instruction by focusing on the qualities that good readers possess (comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expanded vocabulary) and then motivating the student to apply those strategies by setting personal goals, meeting with them in a structured program and working with the student on strategies to acquire the necessary skills. Their program can be part guided reading or work independently of it. The best part? The emphasis shift from tons of busy center paperwork to realistic reading application!

This book really helps first year teachers set up reading and writing workshops. My students have made a lot of growth because I implemented many strategies from this book.

This is my third year as an elementary school teacher. I am always looking for better ways to teach reading strategies to my students. This book has great strategies, mini lessons, and was to organize your reading block. The Daily Five book is a great compliment to this book. You must read both.

After hearing teacher after teacher rave about this book, I decided to read it cover to cover. While I am reflective and will incorporate some of the ideas in this book, overall I felt this book was a HUGE disappointment. I am a teacher who loves, loves, loves Irene Fountas, Gay Su Pinnell, Isabel Beck, Debbie Miller and Lucy Calkins. I am a purist... Readers' Workshop, Word Study, and Writer's Workshop. I know it works. I have seen it work with English Language Learners, Non-English Language Learners, and students from all economic classes. The CAFE BOOk overanalyzes student data and tries to categorize reading strategies into these neat little categories. Reading Strategies are dynamic, used simultaneously, and are magical. This book and The Daily Five suck the magic out of reading instruction. Read Debbie Miller's Reading for Meaning and remember why you became a teacher, remember the magic of curiosity, remember how to let data guide your instruction but not overtake it and replace it. BALANCED LITERACY the old school Fountas and Pinnell way is magical.. DON'T POLLUTE IT WITH THE DAILY FIVE AND THE CAFE BOOK...

This book supplements the authors' prior book The Daily Five. It provides strategies to teach/remediate varied areas of reading deficits. It provides useful charts to set up a literacy notebook so as to enable a teacher to spend most of her/his time teaching rather than reinventing the wheel. It provides an organizes framework from which to manage your literacy block.

This book is written by 2 sisters who are primary teachers. Through years of teaching, experience and their own education and observations they have provided a guide to help those who teach reading how to do it better and smarter. Their method concentrates on Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and vocabulary. This is a smart book to help teachers teach better. Highly recommended!

This is one of the best books to give teachers easy ways to help students learn comprehension techniques, writing strategies, and vocabulary. It is very easy to read and understand. The writers explain things the same way that they explain them to their own students, so it's easy to model the same things with your own class. I used several of their strategies in my own class and the kids really understood and made great improvement.
