Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven’t thought about—yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level. This ancient secret is fasting.

Fasting is not about starving oneself. When done right, it’s an incredibly effective therapeutic approach that produces amazing results regardless of diet plan. In fact, Toronto-based nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung has used a variety of fasting protocols with more than 1,000 patients, with fantastic success. In The Complete Guide to Fasting, he has teamed up with international bestselling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it’s so important, and how to fast in a way that improves health. Together, they make fasting as a therapeutic approach both practical and easy to understand.

The Complete Guide to Fasting explains:

• why fasting is actually good for health
• who can benefit from fasting (and who won’t)
• the history of fasting
• the various ways to fast: intermittent, alternate-day, and extended fasting
• what to expect when starting to fast
• how to track progress while fasting
• the weight loss effects of fasting
• how to ward off potential negative effects from fasting

The book also provides tools to help readers get started and get through their fasts, including a 7-Day Kick-Start Fasting Plan and healing liquid recipes.

About the Author

Dr. Jason Fung earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto, where he also completed his internal medicine residency before heading to UCLA for a fellowship in nephrology (a branch of medicine concerned with the kidneys). He currently practices as a kidney specialist in Toronto.

During the course of treating thousands of patients, it became clear to Dr. Fung that the epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity was getting worse. The prevailing dietary recommendations for reducing dietary fat and calories were clearly ineffective. In response, he founded the Intensive Dietary Management program ( to provide a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity that promotes simple yet effective dietary changes rather than focusing on medications.

Jimmy Moore catapulted onto the health scene in 2004 after a phenomenal 180-pound weight loss enabled him to come off prescription drugs for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and respiratory problems. He is the energetic personality behind the uber-popular blog Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb and the host of the longest-running and top-ranked iTunes health podcast, The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show, as well as Low-Carb Conversations and Keto Talk. He has interviewed well over 1,000 of the world’s top health experts and has dedicated his life to helping people get the best information possible about nutrition so they can make the right decisions for their health. He’s the international bestselling author of The Ketogenic Cookbook, Keto Clarity, and Cholesterol Clarity. Learn more about Jimmy and his work at

I read the book and was impressed with this basic information on intermittent fasting. I think the 24 hour fast would work for my lifestyle and I plan to start right away. I am not diabetic but my glucose levels are certainly headed in that direction. I am borderline pre hypertension and hoping this will also reduce my blood pressure. Thank you Dr. Jason Fung for your knowledge and expertise.

Fasting is a basic practice and this book covers that well. I am bit bias so I won't do a full review, but I have followed Dr. Fung for awhile now and his practices have benefited me. I just wanted to read the book to make sure I had all my bases covered.

I decided to read this book after having the sample in my Nook account for a couple of years. It gives lists of rich, relevant information about fasting without being overwhelming. I’ve decided to do a 30-day fast and am on Day 3. It seems that I am right on target and the book has relieved my anxiety about fasting. I definitely recommend for those who suffer metabolic disease or anyone who wants to know more about the benefits and and ins and outs of fasting.

I loved the fasting research and advice, but took a star off for the diet advice. He is right about eating low processed food, but misses the mark a bit. Look for info on the blue zones. These people aren't eating a lot of meat or fat daily. They also eat fruit, and low carb diets don't usually allow much fruit. Coconut oil is a processed food. Why not just eat the coconut? I think every person is unique and has different diet needs. I have tried LCHF, and feel a lot better with the Eat To Live diet (with a little salt added in), but my very thin family members lose too much weight on this diet. They still eat what I cook, but they need to eat other things I can't.

This is an amazing book that puts it in easy to understand words on why it's so hard lose weight. Explains the myths behind "starvation mode" . If you have tried to lose weight and have failed, this book explains why. Reading this you will know it makes sense, against all the diet advice you have heard.

More like the incomplete guide to fasting. This book is not written for someone who truly wishes to undergo a fast. While Dr. Fung does an excellent job of presenting data and research history, it reads more like an argument for why fasting is a good idea rather than a guide on how to do it. It feels like he is justifying the legitimacy of his work to the medical community, which is great as a new view of this treatment is surely needed in western medicine, but it does nothing as a guide for users who wish to undergo a fast. It says nothing about how to prepare for a fast, what to expect on a fast and more importantly, how to break a fast. Anyone attempting a fast MUST know these things before they fast or else they risk harm to themselves; Dr. Fung, being a health professional should have considered that when he wrote the book. What they need is medical advice, not dozens of anecdotes by people who support the data. Save your money and do a few hours of research online instead. I found a lot more helpful information for practical use of fasting in a few hours of reading online than I did in this book.
