The second book in a new trilogy from Joseph Delaney, the author of the internationally best-selling Last Apprentice series.
Tom Ward is now spook of the county, and with his apprentice, Jenny, he continues the fight against boggarts, witches, and terrifying new creatures of the dark. Together with the witch assassin, Grimalkin, Tom and Jenny lead an army into battle against a dangerous enemy—but it all goes catastrophically wrong. The situation seems hopeless until Alice—Tom’s lost love and a powerful witch—appears. But Alice had turned to the dark: can Tom trust her now?
Joseph Delaney’s deliciously scary imagination continues Tom’s saga, introducing new readers to the struggle against the encroaching dark and taking longtime fans back to familiar settings, where they will find old friends—and old enemies.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews
Delaney never disappoints! I've followed this series from book one "Revenge of the Witch: The Last Apprentice" as well as any short stories/novellas, and the world building is exceptional! Intense emotions, and situations keep you intrigued. The storyline draws you in and makes everything seem believable. The characters are deep and rich, steadily evolving, yet always familiar. The protagonist is interesting and visceral, you always want him to win. He is dedicated to his work, and draws other characters willingly into his battle with the "Dark", always striving to keep the "Light" victorious. Although this book doesn't end in a cliffhanger, it leaves you knowing that there is more ahead! Start from the beginning and read them all, you won't be disappointed!
In this chapter of Thomas Ward's story, we start to connect old relationships from previous books to the present. That's a really big nudge to whom I am talking about, but anyways, this story went a bit slow for me, but it is not without it's surprises!
