What is the difference between having empathy and being an empath? "Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain," says Judith Orloff, MD. "But for empaths it goes much further. We actually feel others’ emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have." With The Empath’s Survival Guide, Dr. Orloff offers a practical tool set to help sensitive people develop healthy coping mechanisms in our high-stimulus world—while fully embracing the empath’s gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.

This practical, empowering, and loving book was created to support empaths and anyone who wants to develop their sensitivities to become more caring people in an often-insensitive world. It helps empaths through their unique challenges and gives loved ones a better understanding of the needs and gifts of the sensitive people in their lives. In this book Dr. Orloff offers crucial practices, including:

• Self-assessment exercises to help you identify your empath type

• Tools for protecting yourself from sensory overload, exhaustion, addictions, and compassion fatigue while replenishing your vital energy

• Simple and effective strategies to stop absorbing stress and physical symptoms from others and protect yourself from narcissists and other energy vampires

• How to find the right work and create relationships that nourish you

• How to navigate intimate relationships without feeling overwhelmed

• Guidance for parenting and raising empathic children

• Awakening the empath’s gift of intuition and deepening your spiritual connection to all living beings

For any sensitive person who’s been told to "grow a thick skin," this paperback edition of The Empath's Survival Guide is an invaluable resource for staying fully open while building resilience, exploring your gifts of depth and compassion, and feeling welcome and valued by a world that desperately needs what you have to offer.

Dr Orloff has written a book that speaks to every sensitive person and anyone else who wants to be able to fully embrace their empathy. This book covers all areas of sensitivities but focuses on those who are the most sensitive – empaths. She helps people understand that there is a logical and scientific explanation for their sensitivities. As well Dr Orloff gives lots of techniques to help one stay grounded and centered but most of all she gives the reader the encouragement to fully embrace the gifts they have been given. I highly recommend this book!

From the start I knew that "The Empath's Survival Guide" would be the most succinct and helpful book I would ever find to navigate through life; it is the Ultimate Guide for True Freedom for Empaths! I learned about being an Empath from Dr. Orloff's previous books on the subject and it has definitely changed my life. Empath's comprise approximately 15-20% of people who are, unfortunately, misunderstood by most. Dr. Orloff has helped me to understand a Sensitive Nature that many family and friends, throughout my entire life, have encouraged me to change. How can one change their inner essence? Now I KNOW that it is a "GIFT" which, understood and used accordingly, can not only enhance my life, but everyone else's as well. What a difference this change of attitude has made. I am definitely Happier and Freer, enjoying life to the fullest because of it. I am indebted to Dr. Judith Orloff for her life's work in breaking the chains of shame that block so many empathic souls. I believe that with this knowledge, we can change an insensitive world and bring back Compassion and Empathy to a planet that desperately needs just that. Eternally Grateful to Dr. Orloff for this magnificent book and can't recommend it highly enough!!! Get this book and you won't be sorry, I promise!!!

Essential reading for a sensitive person or someone who loves a sensitive person. I was given this book and I'm really grateful for the insight it contains. As a dad, I especially love the section on parenting. Very well organized and lots of practical exercises and tips. I am married to an empath and the tools in this book will really help our relationship. The author writes in a simple, direct style that makes it easy to absorb and apply the lessons.

The Empath’s Survival Guide, is a welcome resource for those of us who get easily exhausted in crowds and need time alone to recharge. After years of feeling that something was wrong with me, I felt a deep sense of relief, understanding, and encouragement reading this book. I recognized myself in many of her examples and realized how I’d been shamed since childhood for being “too sensitive” when what I really needed was time alone, time in nature, time to get centered and feel like myself again. The book offers powerful insights, tools, and strategies for empaths to recognize our needs, set healthy boundaries, and protect ourselves from toxic personalities and draining situations. It also shows how honoring our empathic nature can lead to greater joy and purpose in our lives. Thank you, Dr. Orloff, for this wonderful, liberating book!

Wish I’d had access to Empath’s Survival Guide years ago! Reading it would’ve saved me a lot of unhappiness, anxiety, and frustration. I had no clue why I was “so overly sensitive” as people would tell me. I couldn’t understand my fears about driving, walking through bright, cluttered retail stores, or my need to be alone to recharge my batteries. I’ve had more than one doctor say I had the most active nervous system they’ve ever seen. I just thought I was weird. Judith Orloff takes us through the curse and blessing of having “hyper-responsive mirror Neurons.” In other words, Empaths mirror others’ feelings and pain. We learn about the beauty of Synesthesia, a neurological condition in which two different senses are paired in the brain. The frustration of agoraphobia, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraines, chronic pain, allergies, and adrenal fatigue (a form of burnout). Emotionally, we may suffer panic attacks, depression, anxiety, etc. The book also has a 20-question test to determine if you are an Empath. (I scored 18) Dr. Orloff gives us strategies on shielding from the stress of others, and on Grounding .“Visualize the tree’s roots growing from the bottom of your feet, rooting down into the ground, making their way deeper and deeper, a comforting sense of solidity.” Detoxing with water, and guides to meditation. The chapter describing different kinds of Empaths was enlightening. For instance, some Empaths suffer from addiction like food or alcohol. Paths are provided to minimize the damage to our minds and bodies. We learn about Energy Vampires, Drama Queens, Control Freaks, and Criticizers and how to control our response to them. A particularly fascinating section is on Indigo Children. Indigos are a great new wave of children with more awakened intuition, sensitivities, clarity of purpose, and interest in changing the planet for the good. They’re often described as “old souls” who have a profound grasp of the human condition. Another guides us through accepting the parents that we cannot change. There’s even a chapter on the best and worst types of work and professions for Empaths. The Empath’s Survival Guide is just that. Whether you’re an Empath, suspect you are and wondering why you always seem to be out of step with the rest of the world, this is the book for you. Highly recommended.

Over simplified approach, as most self help books. Didn't make it to the end. Didn't really come across any new information.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has felt misunderstood all their life as a result of being told they are “too sensitive”. Dr. Orloff’s book offers insight and coping strategies to help highly sensitive people from feeling overwhelmed by their sensitivities. Many examples described in the book are similar to experiences I have had. This book will validate that you’re not weird or crazy just because you can feel the energy of other people, or can sense spirits, or have “seen” events that happened in the past or will happen in the future, or have knowledge (without being told) of things happening in the present but far away. Thank you, Dr. Orloff, for sharing with us your lifetime of hard-earned insight.

Very well written and organized for clear understanding of her message.

I so wanted to like this book, but sadly not. She blathers on about things that as an Empath don't affect me, or any Empaths that I know. This book is good for Empaths that are just starting out or suffer from the addictions she writes about. I related to very little in this book and sped read most of it. You could go on YouTube and google most of the information she provides. You can find most of her information for free online and mostly by learning and knowing what an Empath is and does. I highly recommend the videos on YouTube. Do some research on your own before buying this book. There is way better information out there.

The Empath's Survival Guide is an insightful book that shares helpful information on how to be sensitive in such an insensitive world without absorbing the emotions of others. There is an interesting science behind what it means to be an empath which includes having a hyperactive mirror neuron system and too much compassion--and less need for dopamine rushes as well as the phenomenon of emotional contagion. The tips she shares will help so many people! Judith Orloff, MD offers techniques that are often overlooked for those dealing with their sensitivities. Definitely a must read!
