The Golden Striker

1 New & Used Starting at $24.63

In the right hands, the guitar-bass-piano trio can be one of the most sublime ensembles in jazz. The right hands are all here on this stellar project: guitarist Russell Malone, pianist Mulgrew Miller, and bassist Ron Carter. The nominal leader, Carter, actually melds seamlessly into the fold, soloing his share but never grandstanding. (Although, when Carter does step out to strut, as on his unaccompanied statement on “Concierto de Aranjuez, (Adagio Theme)” this remarkably consistent player can still amaze with his unimpeachable technique and striking ideas.) Malone and Miller, two fine instrumentalists who are often taken for granted, are also in top form, both as improvisers and as team players who gracefully merge with Carter to create a singular group sound. Listening without knowledge of the participants, you’d imagine that this trio had been working together for years; such is their intuitive blend. We can only hope that this ad hoc band reunites soon.
