About the Author

EUGENE H. PETERSON is a writer, poet, and retired pastor. He has authored more than thirty-four books (not including The Message). He is Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eugene also founded Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland, where he ministered for twenty-nine years. After teaching at a seminary, he created The Message, a vibrant Bible paraphrase that connects with today's readers like no other.

It took Peterson ten years to complete. He worked not from any English text but from the original Hebrew and Greek texts to guarantee authenticity. At the same time, his ear was always tuned to the cadence and energy of the English spoken every day on the streets. He lives with his wife, Jan, in Montana.

I've been waiting for The Message with verses marked. So much easier to read and compare to my other translations. Many people have said that the only accurate translation is the King James Version. However, if you read The Message and the KJV together, you find nothing has been left out. The phrasing is just in modern English. Somewhat slangy, but it's understandable to the average American. Which would you understand; 'Get Thee hence, Satan,' or 'Beat it, Satan!'

There are so many different trannslastions out there, hardly any of them I can understand. This is put into words that I can comprehend. Before when I read the Bible, it was unfathomable to me, but now, I got it. I absolutely enjoy reading this version of the Message. It really is just wounderful. I highly, highly recommend this to anyone really, but for those you want to know more about the Lord, and need a little extra insite and understandable meaning, this is it, this is the one. You won't have to look any farther than this.

This translation brings the sometimes difficult to understand wording of other translations into modern day life. I love reading it alongside of my other bible wording to compare.

good to read and get an outline of the bible, but it is hard to study when it is inexact in translation, it sometimes conveys a different meaning than a more direct translation. the best translated book is proverbs, which gives great modern day meanings of ancient wisdom.

This amazing 'remix' takes God's word and makes it totally readable. For someone who loves to read, they can read this version as though God himself was telling the story. For those who just need a little extra for church or a Bible study, this will bring a spring of freshness to the atmospeare.

I absolutely love this Bible! Everyone's been waiting forever to get a hold of The Message with verse numbers. So now you can read the Message (a fabulous poetic and easy-to-read translation) and find the Scripture verses easier. I like to read verses of the Message first, then read the NIV.

I don't like this version. I suppose I'm willing to go along with the idea that it's good for young people who haven't been exposed to much reading and who otherwise wouldn't try reading the Bible. The other side of that argument is all about low expectations. There's absolutely no reason why young people can't read and understand the New RSV, for example. It just strikes me as a further "dumbing down" and goes along with everything else that's going on in the churches today. I'm thinking particularly of the music and all the silent organs that might as well be dismantled for scrap.I bought this book so that I would know for myself what the book is like. Now I know. I give it half a star only because I can't give it negative stars.

I love the Message translation. It's such a wonderful, passionate interpretation of the Bible, and speaks to you in a way that makes its timeless words relevant NOW. Whenever I read it, it makes me want to go out and DO something about my faith!

I personally like The Message, but only with a discerning eye. It is really a running commentary on the bible rather than a translation. I give it 4 stars because, again, I find many good thoughts in it.

I have 5 Bible in which I cross reference with each other when I need a deeper understanding.  This is great as an additional source but I honestly would say not to be your only source.  I use this one when my other translations are too "advanced" for me.  It will be great for a newbie to start with!!

This is a great bible that is easy to understand. I have started to reading the bible, and unlike many others, I can understand it and enjoy The Word of God. The cover feels very cool and is washable and the pages are very thin. There is a piece of pink silk that is attached to the book that is a very helpful bookmark. In the back there is: the Atopical Guide for Students, maps, and Books of the Old and New Testament organized in the general order of events. This is a great bible to get if you are wanting to read the bible and get a good grasping of it, then get this one. I got this at a Christian book store rather than Barnes and Noble, but this price is cheaper by only s few dollars. This is a must have in any Christian Home.

My teenager daughter loved this. It is a contemporary interpretation that teenagers understand and the packaging is cool.

This isn't your KJV where you feel like you are going into the "Holy of Holies" speaking high English to a world without understanding. This is getting to the basics of what God's word wanted to share with you, hundreds of years later. A serious studier of the Word of God won't use this to quote scripture, but it will certainly awaken your heart with understanding and hopefully in turn change you from the inside out and start you on your journey. *** Great for Teenagers, Young Adults, or anyone who just wants to have a refreshing from God without too much mental work.

I have read and studied in several translations of the Bible. NEVER have I enjoyed the read as much as the Message. My reading retention is up, my enjoyment is up, my comprehension is up! Bought it originally for my teen, now every member of my family has their own copy!

I kind of just stumble on this book while looking for a Christian journal one day and the title of this book caught my attention. I opened it and began reading and realized that this was merely the bible re-vamped to what I like to call 'the hip-hop version' of the bible. It was great and totally understandable. I love reading it. It actually tells a story to the point that you feel as though you were there 2000 years ago. Great job Mr. Peterson well done!

As a minister for nearly 20 years im so pleased to have a translation of the Bible that not only is in the modern language but actually allows for a pleasant the whole Scripture comes alive on the page. It makes for Bibles reading where you dont want to put the 'Book' down.

I bought this bible on the recommendation of a freind as a good read for someone who's never read the bible before, and they were right. I thoroughly enjoy reading this, and the introductions to each book are nice to put things in context. In a lot of ways I like this more than a word for word translation, because to me the ideas and lessons of the bible, and being able to understand it is more important than reading a perfect translation. The main reason I gave this 4 and not 5 stars is that I plan on carrying this with me as much as I can, and the hardback cover makes that difficult, which is why I plan to give it to my mom to read, and buy a copy of the vintage leather addition. On the plus side, its very easy to read in terms of legibility of the text, even though the type face isnt't enormous, and it has no presentation page, which was a plus for me, since I bought it for myself, but might be a drawback for others.
