The recordings from their 1967 European tour are some of the only existing documentation of the band performing compositions from the extraordinary series of studio albums they made between 1965-1967 -- E.S.P., Miles Smiles and Sorcerer. Now fans can hear live versions of “Agitation” (from E.S.P.), "Gingerbread Boy” ( from Miles Smiles), “Masquelero" (from Sorcerer ); plus, Miles revisits some of the earlier classics he had been performing for years -- “Round Midnight” & “On Green Dolphin Street”, -- all in strikingly different interpretations from the original studio versions. Seeing this band in action only further emphasizes their near supernatural rapport! From the Label

Many jazz fans talk in reverent tones of the 1965-1968 quintet consisting of Miles Davis (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (sax), Herbie Hancock (keyboards), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums). Some claim this was the best group Davis ever led, even better that the early quintet that included John Coltrane. Some of their music I have heard left me a bit puzzled about all the hype, but I decided to try at this anthology of the three CD set of their 1967 European tour just before they began going electric. I found it more accessible than I had expected, not as easy to listen to as Kind Of Blue, but mostly very pleasant. Hancock took center stage much of the time while Davis and Shorter added dramatic interjections and Carter kept the rhythm going. Williams was a powerhouse, using his drums and cymbals to drive the music toward rock. He must have been the equal of any drummer of the time, including Keith Moon. Occasionally the music becomes a bit abstract for my taste but I give Live In Europe 1967 a strong 4 stars.
