FOREWORD

"So Mark... Painter SIX Wow! Can you believe it?"

"Wow is right! Where does the time go?"

"I don't know, but Cher sure must have used a lot of it writing this book!"

In some respects, it seems like such a short time ago since Painter first appeared. Using the natural-media concept as a central theme, Painter has grown and matured into a powerful environment for creative expression on the computer. Cher and her Painter WOW! Books have expertly chronicled this growth over the years. Seems like we talk with her quite often.

Writing about something that is exclusively visual presents a formidable challenge. It's one thing to view an artwork or design piece as an aesthetic experience; it's an entirely different thing to dissect it and divine its internal construction. Cher takes this task and turns it into a highly informative and entertaining experience for her readers. The Painter 6 WOW! Book is the written equivalent of looking over an artist's shoulder as he paints, or draws, or airbrushes or.

. . Painter 6 WOW! is based on a step-by-step instructional premise. A finished artwork example is introduced as the final result of applying a set of techniques. With the example as a starting point, individual image-making concepts are introduced to the reader. These singular concepts are then used like building blocks to construct the final image. This is a very powerful method of instruction, particularly for image-making. It's often difficult, if not impossible, to visualize the creative journey the artist goes through to arrive at a final design. WOW! does this with dozens of examples.

These instructional examples will appeal to both the beginning and experienced Painter user. For the beginner, it's akin to being shown the secret to a magic trick; for the experienced user, it's an enriching fuel for boosting creativity. Cher also seasons her examples with tidbits of art history and traditional technique. There are no empty calories in this visual and instructional feast!

Painter is a tool for personal creative expression. There is no better way to illustrate this than by showcasing high-quality examples created by Painter users. WOW! is lushly illustrated throughout with these examples. The Gallery sections amply demonstrate what can be accomplished through a mastery of Painter's tools.

And without a good teacher, mastery of any kind is often an elusive goal. Through The Painter 6 WOW! Book, Cher offers users a key for unlocking this mastery within themselves. (Use the brush, Luke! But don't force it!)

"Note also, Mark, how once again we're surprised at the variety and quality of the work produced with Painter!"

"Yeah, and we're also surprised at completeness of Cher's cohesive compendium of creative content in The Painter 6 WOW! Book."

"That's a mouthful of words about an eyeful of art! Let's go make some art!"

"Right! After reading this, I think I'm going to work on my next Painter poster image!"
