Overview

Petrified of a family generational curse, tormented by a love-driven sin, Marloe Vain seeks revenge. Sworn to celibacy after her betrothed, Lawson James, breaks her heart, every suitor thereafter must pay. Marloe uses the breathtaking "power" of her beauty to garner posh jewels from love interests, abandoning them when they fall deeply for her, spiritually justifying her actions. A chance encounter with distinguished lawyer, Syril Barrett, brings her life to a grinding halt. Lawson returns to win her back, stirring painful memories and doubt of her worthiness. Needing a sign from God, she devises an unconventional test of Syril's sincerity.
Family secrets abound, as Marloe's parents, the revered Deacon Bailey Vain and Rosette, are trapped in a deceitful and unforgiving web. Publicly, they appear the idyllic couple, but behind closed doors, their marriage is a 30-year "cold-war." For the Vain family, the journey to forgiveness, redemption, and unconditional love is a voyage of wretched lows and dazzling highs, culminating with unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.

The Vain Girl is about all kinds of love, family, friendship and trust. It’s also about how we are all able to mature, no matter at what age. Cindy Newsome takes us into the life of an African American family and teaches young women, as well as the rest of us, that we can learn from life’s experiences and diversity – and better the world around us. A very positive read. Marion Behr WWH PRESS LLC

Presented with a title like 'The Vain Girt' and a main character whose name is Marloe Vain, one might readily expect to encounter a character who is highly allegorical. Marloe Vain is indeed vain, but she is by no means one-dimensional. Through well-rounded characters and intricate plots, Cindy Williams Newsome in this her second book captures and holds the reader's attention from Marloe's "innocent fall" through her torturing and tortuous journey to redemption. While the main journey is Marloe's, other characters, too, have difficult paths to travel and hard lessons to learn. All these Ms. Williams Newsome skillfully brings together in a tale that is at once a compelling love story, a rich family saga, a strong spiritual testimony. You'll like this book. You'll be reminded of its characters and their predicaments in real-life situations long after you've finished turning its pages.

Finally, after a long wait, I was able to get my hands on Cindy Newsome's second book! What an excellent, uplifting story! The Vain Girl centers on a family that must come to grips with a number of difficult life issues. The author masterfully weaves the main character's journey throughout the story and creatively connects it to her entire family. The Vain Girl is a love story: not only the love between a man and a woman, but the love one must seek within oneself. It's also a story that centers on faith and how a deep belief in religious values is necessary to face life's obstacles. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

A pleasure to read; this fast paced and memorable novel grabs the reader from the first page. The story line brings to light the powerful influence of family and the way in which the family unit sculpts the younger generation’s ideas of sex and religion. The Vain girl faces conflicting forces. As family tales practically destroy her life and dominate her beliefs, there is a sharp clash between her familial values and the spirit of a strong-willed heroine. Balancing self-inflicted expectations within a religious framework, the heroine is caught in the center of an emotional and internal conundrum. A twist at the end enchants the reader. Cindy Williams Newsome is a new author on the scene delighting the reader with her tale of love and examination of the human spirit. Can’t wait for Ms. Newsome’s next book!

'The Vain Girl' Book Review by Tempie Delois Williams Author of 'Feelings ' ISBN 1-4241-0706-7 The author created such a wonderful sense of interest from the beginning in the title, 'The Vain Girl.' I immediately wanted to know, ' Who was this Vain Girl?' and 'What was her significance? In reading the first sentence, I was on way to getting all my answers. The storyline opens with seventeen year old Marloe Vain being introduced along with her family, friends and her family's horrified secrets and beliefs that have gone on for generations. As a reader you immediately find yourself walking in the shoes of a young teenage girl growing up with normal needs and desires, and you go on her roller coaster rides as she has to endure a life terrified of a sin provoked by the love of her childhood sweetheart, Lawson James. Throughout the story, the author bring in situations that both you and Marloe have to find answers to. It is a wonderful journey that could be looked at differently, but being a family deeply rooted in religious beliefs, you understand how the key factors that are reflected upon for, The Vain Family, are forgiveness and redemption. A wonderful love-story with strong interwoven moments of unwavering faith of a family as well as all those involved along the way . I highly recommend, 'The Vain Girl' not only because it is an excellent read but because it is soul searching.
