This Loud Morning is a curiously appropriate title for a David Cook album. Unlike so many rockers, Cook makes music not for the dead of night but for the crack of dawn, music that greets the day with a modicum of measured inspiration. This is particularly true of this 2011 sophomore set, an album that sands down any lingering rough edges from his 2008 post-American Idol major-label debut. Strangely enough, these rough edges include not only the faster songs that peppered David Cook but anything resembling a discernable hook. Every cut marches along with a stately purpose and each track is colored with countless guitars, so many that it stands to reason that this album would sound loud, yet it never does. Everything is tempered and deliberate, which isn't to say it's insincere: Cook emotes with gusto, never stopping to consider that his singing is lacquered over by all those guitars. So, This Loud Morning winds up as an album that's primarily textural mood music for the morning, and one that's not all that loud either.

I don't know what the reviewer was listening to, but it was not David Cook's This Loud Morning. If the reviewer did their research, than they would know that this album was inspired by the many lows and highs of his first tour. This Loud Morning represents those mornings he didn't want to get out of bed when all those feelings came rushing at him once his tour was over. Although David says the album is a loosely themed concept album about the rise and fall of a relationship, you can feel through all his passionate tracks that the back story is about the loss of his beloved brother. I love how the title track- Circadian plays with cool instrumentation like a child's piano and a boy's choir. How can you not feel for a guy that sings Mayday...somebody save me? And trust me this album is LOUD. There are crunchy guitars everywhere, even on the moody ballad Goodbye to the Girl. There are inspirational tracks like We Believe that are meant to be sung in a stadium during a sports event. R.E.M. is a cool closing track that really rocks and repeats the boys choir mantra of Mayday...somebody save me. If you love big passionate voices that soar over two octave ranges and is not auto-tuned, than you will not be disappointed with David's new album.

David Cook's sophomore effort with RCA is a stellar album lyrically and musically and it does not disappoint. The title of the album "This Loud Morning" is taken from "Rapid Eye Movement" the closing song on the record and the best song on the record. The full Lyric is "Give me one more quiet night 'fore this loud morning gets it right and does me in" Musically Rapid Eye Movement is layered and intricate with a dreamy quality at the end that takes you full circle into Circadian the first song on the record. This album shows David Cook's growth as a songwriter and musician. I am impressed with every song on the album but Rapid Eye Movement, Circadian and Goodbye To The Girl are standout. I highly recommend this album.
