Description: This update of an established general textbook of medical genetics comes 50 years after the original by James and Margaret Thompson and eight years after the previous edition. This eighth edition is masterfully written by Nussbaum, McInnes, and Willard. Widely known as Thompson and Thompson, this is an instrumental book in the field. This edition comes with access to an ebook version of great utility.
Purpose: While meeting the goal of providing students with a framework for understanding the field of medical genetics and genomics on which they can build their continuing education, the book also provides a link between basic science and clinical application of genetic knowledge.
Audience: The audience for this wonderful book is broad, ranging from undergraduate students in science to graduate students in medical genetics. Medical genetics residents may find it a unique resource for understanding the clinical applicability of the genetic science. It is also a useful tool for students and physicians preparing to take the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics certification exams. Seasoned clinicians may find it helpful as a consulting tool for reviewing basic concepts in medical genetics.
Features: Among the unique details that distinguish this from other books in the field are the brief review questions at the end of each chapter. They represent key points that readers must understand and help reinforce what they've learned. In addition, the design of the book has become reader friendly with exquisite illustrations and well-planned artistic features. There are two helpful indexes, one by chapter and a subject keyword index at the end of the book.
Assessment: The ebook version is easy to access. I was able to sign into the site without difficulty and review the content with easy-to-use navigation tools. I did not test the display in different formats, but an average resolution monitor provides a good display of figures and text.
