TIMELESS TALES is an arrangements record that integrates Bob Dylan protest tunes, Stevie Wonder dream ballads, and Paul McCartney chamber pop. With pure imagination, the celebrated saxophonist tweaks their innards, recasting them as his own. But TALES is an all-star record as well. Or at least a young-guy all-star record. Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, and Larry Grenadier constitute the best band Redman's ever had, and their playing, on tunes that range from "Summertime" to "Eleanor Rigby," has a great vitality. The leader's horns are exclamatory in several spots; he wisely capitalizes on the ensemble's bounding energy. But he can also be soulful, languishing in the lap of a ballad like Joni Mitchell's "I Had A King" until he figures out why he's so blue.
