About the Author
Stephen B. Oates is Paul Murray Kendall Professor of Biography at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His most recent book is A Woman of Valor: Clara Barton and the Civil War. His other books include With Malice Toward None: The Life of Abraham Lincoln; Let the Trumpet Sound: The Life of Martin Luther King Jr.; and Our Fiery Trial; Abraham Lincoln, John Brown, and the Civil War Era. He is the editor of Biography as High Adventure: Life Writers Speak on Their Art.
