Overview

In an approach at once familiar and fresh, Dwight Yoakam weds his hard, Bakersfield-style country to rockabilly rhythms, rock 'n' roll production touches, and honky-tonk heartache in sculpting captivating mise-en-scenes for his lurid tales of love gone wrong. Dwight can always be counted on for a few acerbic takes on the male-female yin-yang; who else would describe a failed love affair as having "wore out my knees," as he does on the classically styled weeper "The Heartaches Are Free"? Yoakam's writing has rarely been richer in texture or subtext than it is on Tomorrow's Sounds Today; his nasal-toned vocals are consistently affecting, and longtime producer Pete Anderson keeps the sound crisp and atmospheric. As an added attraction, Dwight's hero Buck Owens is all over the place here, co-writing and harmonizing on the bittersweet ballad "The Sad Side of Town," penning a chilling twist on the gospel song "I Was There," and joining Yoakam and legendary Tex-Mex accordionist Flaco Jimenez on the rollicking "Alright, I'm Wrong." Top it all off with an infectious, shuffling cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me," and you've got one of Yoakam's most appealing efforts to date. If these are truly Tomorrow's Sounds Today, then our musical future is a bright one indeed.
