Overview

MTV's drama-filled second season of Making the Band put rap impresario P. Diddy in charge of minting a new hip-hop group and kept viewers riveted as the live-in recording process devolved into frequent fisticuffs. With the release of their debut, however, Da Band's blood, sweat, and tears have paid off. Not only are the chosen six -- Babs, Young City (a.k.a. Chopper), Freddrick, Dylan, Sara, and Ness -- more fun to watch than the original Making the Band product, O-Town, but they're more interesting to listen to. With a gangsta stance that'll fool none of the millions who watched the show, Da Band -- anchored by Ness's Scarface-reminiscent and Fred's Scooby Doo-meets-Trick Daddy rap styles -- shine on several tracks, including the Harlem Shake–able "Bad Boy This, Bad Boy That" and the Wyclef-produced "Do You Know," which borrows its hook from Diana Ross's Mahogany theme and spotlights the rude-boy rhymes of Dylan. Thug rapstress Babs and the group's lone singer, Sara, do their thing on the hard-hittin' "Hold Me Down" and the R&B-flavored "Go Steady," respectively. And last, but certainly not least, lovable troublemaker Chopper gets a solo turn to spit his Cash Money–esque rhymes over the droning percussive beat of "Chopped Up." The group's only misstep is on the silly, overtly sexual "Tonight." Overall, Da Band show enough talent to make Diddy proud. Not only are they Too Hot for T.V. -- soon they'll be burning up the airwaves as well.
