So, your bags are packed . . .

What’s the deal with these books?

This is an experiential travel series for the quick getaway traveler, who’s only going to be in a specific spot for three to five days, and wants to get the most out of that time. The point is to get right to the best things the destination has to offer, skipping all of the confusions and shoulda-woulda-couldas.

This is not about traveling on a shoestring. Nor is it about the forced-march tour of as many tourist traps as possible. Experiential travel is about feeling a sense of place, having memorable adventures, connecting with people, and feeling like every minute and penny was well spent.

How is the series organized?

Each book covers a popular vacation theme—SIP is for wine tasting, SUN, for hot-weather activities, and SNOW for winter ones. Thanks to the Internet booking engines, that is exactly how most of us plan travel today: “I want to go get some sun . . . where should I do that?”

How’s it different from what I can get on the Web?

It’s the polar opposite. The Web is information overload, coming from a zillion sources, and you usually don’t have a clue as to who or what they are. The Travel Temptations series offers specific, personal information coming from fifty to sixty local insiders: winery owners, pro athletes, hotel managers, chefs, etc. In fact, every venue, attraction, and activity has been chosen with their help. You can get to know them on the “panel” page at the beginning of each chapter and many of them are conveniently quoted throughout the venue write-ups.

In addition to pointing out their favorite regional hotspots, our insiders give personal insight into whatever topic they know best—whether it be the hidden gold mines of Joshua Tree, or the best boutique Rhone wines in Paso Robles. This is exclusive information you cannot get on the Web. It’s specifically written to be ‘evergreen’ (meaning, current for at least five years), and useful in a broad sense.

How is each book organized?

There are eight sections, covering the top eight destinations within California for the title activity (SIP, SUN, SNOW). Each destination is organized not by geography but by experience. The reason is that each destination has a few things it does really well, which is what visitors come to experience. For example: Palm Desert has great golf. It also has a booming gay scene. If you want a sunny golf getaway and you stumble into a three-day gay pride party, you may be unhappy. So we separate the Palm Desert gay experience from the golf/spa experience. You can mix and match, but at least you’ll know what you’re in for.

If you prefer to plan according to geography, fine. Our “Birds Eye” overview at the front of each section goes over basic destination geography, and then breaks the destination down into one-day-driveable areas. There is an area map showing key venues in the front of each chapter, and each venue write-up later in the chapter is tagged to a certain area.

If you want to really make vacation-planning a no-brainer, we’ve compiled multi-day experiential itineraries within each region, and mapped them out in connect-the-dots fashion. Follow the dots to a seamless experiential getaway. (Doing one day of one and one day of another is fine, too.)

So, do the venue picks cover everywhere in the destination?

Um, no. Were you honestly planning to hit every place in the destination within five days? Visiting five hundred wineries, staying in fifty hotels . . . I think not. This series covers the best spots, consistent with what the area does best, as determined by people with the best taste. We really don’t have time for everything else.
